Dragon
Ball Z - The TV Specials |
During the usual season of Dragon Ball Z, two TV specials, each lasting an hour, were
shown. |
The first TV Special relate the story of Bardock, the father of Son Goku, and the
destruction of the planet Vejiita by Freeza. This special is inspired by the short
appearance of Baddaku in flash back scene in the manga book 28. (Acutally there is only
one picture of Baddaku in the manga from what I remember) This special is very interesting
because we get to see the very beggining of the whole DB story - the planet Vejiita and
the saiyajins before their destruction, and even prince Vejiita himself as a child! He is
exactly the same as later - evil! :)
The second TV Special relate the story of Trunks in the
alternate future, and how he came back to the past. This feature is inspired from a short
manga story that was later collected in DB book 33 : Trunk the Story. The Special is more
or less the same, but much longer and detailled. The major difference is that in the
anime, Trunks transfrom into a Super Saiya-jin AFTER Son Gohan is killed. This special is
the dream of all the Mirai fans (those who like the "Mirai" (Future) world of DB
and of course... Trunks!).
Both Specials have animation superior to
the usual TV Series, but inferior to later movies. On the other hand, the story of the TV
Special is FAR superior to those of the movies - and has direct connection to the
storyline! The Specials are part of the series.
The 2 TV special are my among my
personal Dragon Ball episodes ever, but it's possible that they will not appeal to
newcomers. The first special is not very full of action, and concentrate on storytelling.
The second special is recommended, though, since it's shock-full of action. Both specials
finish on a reather depressing note, but I like that. They are the most dramatic DB
stories.
