DURING WORLD WAR TWO

Officer rank insignia have not changed since World War Two. So no images of these insignia are necessary on our site. However, there have been drastic changes in the Warrant Officer and Enlisted grades, as well as branch insignia for; Armor, Tank Destroyers and Air Corps. They are shown below.

Warrant Officer Rank and Insignia during World War Two

Two grades of warrant officer were created on August 21, 1941. In September, 1942, the design of insignia shown above was approved. In November the same year a flight officer rank with the insignia was established with the same insignia as the warrant officer junior grade except the enamel was blue. Warrant officers insignia for the Army Mine Planter Service are not shown, but may be seen at the site linked below. The position of Flight Officer was abolished in 1945.

In January 1942 the grades of Technician in the third, fourth and fifth grades were added by War Department. The letter "T" was added to the formerly prescribed chevrons for grades three, four and five. Battalions had a Sergeant Major, but there was no distinctive insignia. The insignia of Master Sergeant was worn.
