Christmas Carolling
DECEMBER

The City of Devonport Brass band took to the streets yet again for our annual Christmas carol fundraising. We were more fortunate as the weather proved to be kinder to us this year (although one night was rescheduled), and we even managed to revisit some areas we haven't been to for a while.

Many thanks to all our players (including the snap-happy Wen visiting from overseas), our team of collectors, and most of all the Devonport community for your generous donations (especially in this time of financial uncertainty).

Devonport Carols by Candlelight
14 DECEMBER, Bluff Soundshell

Hundreds of people were welcomed to the Bluff by the City of Devonport Brass band's Christmas carols, Little Drummer Boy Connor Hendrey, and vocal arrangement of Six White Boomers.

We then combined with members from the Latrobe Federal Band to form a Big Brass Band, and shared the stage with vocals from talented local performers, as well as the jolly man in red and white himself!

TBL State Band Championships
12 OCTOBER, Latrobe

A fine but early morning start was had by the City of Devonport Brass band at the Latrobe Town Hall for this year's Band Championships. We played our hymn Holy Holy Holy and test piece Legends in Brass well, was delayed in playing our street march Simplicity due to our absent Drum Major (needed to enlist the help of Glenorchy's), and returned to the Hall for our dynamic stage march Jack 'O Lantern and own choice Finlandia.

Despite our concerted efforts, we still came in 'second cornet' to our competition. However, our spirits were lifted shortly after as the day was topped off by a special presentation to Jan Winkle for his fifty years of membership with the Tasmanian Bands League. We warm-heartedly thanks Jan for all his years of playing, teaching and stories, and look forward to many more...

ANZAC Day March
25 APRIL

The rain held off for this year's ANZAC Day march, helped along by the City of Devonport Brass band's playing of Waltzing Matilda, Colonel Bogey, and 1914 (featuring Australian old-time favourites Tipperary, Hello, Who's Your Lady Friend and Take Me Back To Blighty). The memorial service was also nicely complimented by a choir to help sing the hymns St. Ann and Nearer My God To Thee. Thanks again to Guy Carey (Drum Major), Julia Haywood (bass drum) and John Timmerman (side drum) for their assistance during the march, and to Robert Apse and Peter Georgiades for their Last Post recitals (at the dawn and 11am service respectively).

ANZAC Commemorative Assembly
24 APRIL, Reece High School

The annual ANZAC Commemorative Assembly was held by the Reece High School Prefect Board as part of the schools entry to the Department of Veteran Affairs ANZAC Day Schools’ Awards. Student leaders Joe Howe and Amy French introduced the assembly with a heartfelt summary of the foundation of the ANZAC spirit at Gallipoli in 1915, followed by Toni-Lee Saunders-Locke reading original excerpts from the diary of the grandfather of one of the schools’ teachers who fought at the battle of Gallipoli. After Rebekkah Rundle read the poem In Flanders Fields written by John McCrae, Devonport RSL President Mr. Grant Munday addressed the Reece High School community of the importance of ANZAC Day in modern Australian society. Regular Army Warrant Officer Phillip De Bomford then delivered the Ode For the Fallen, and Robert Apse of the City of Devonport Brass Band performed the Last Post. Jessica Jackson beautifully sang the National Anthem with Addison Davis, Head Prefect, summing up the future significance of ANZAC Day to the students. As the school choir performed Can You Hear Australias’ Heroes Marching?, all students laid a sprig of rosemary underneath the Australian Flag to honour and remember those fallen in past battles. The atmosphere of this assembly was sombre and throughout the fifteen minutes of laying the rosemary, the respectful silence was staggering and extremely moving. The calibre of the present students at Reece High School were highlighted by Regular Army Warrant Officer Phillip De Bomford commenting that it was the best ANZAC Assembly he had attended in 23 years! We look forward to next year's Assembly.
