The MIS option prepares students for careers that apply computer knowledge and information technology to business. It focuses on providing the foundational technical and analytical skills needed to analyze an organization's information system.
An information systems specialist performs an interface function between system programmers and the rest of the organization, and is concerned with the efficient information flow of an organization. Students graduating with an MIS degree may start their career as members of an organization's end-user support group, network support group, a system analyst, etc.
Business managers realize that the knowledge of applying and using computer technology is an essential ingredient to business success and survival. A successful information systems career combines three principal ingredients:
a. A sound understanding of the "business fundamentals" such as operations, accounting, finance and marketing.
b. A knowledge of current "information technology" including an enthusiasm for keeping up with rapid changes.
c. Good "analytical and communication" skills to assist the business organizations, in using technology to meet business strategic goals.
The MIS program is designed to combine the three essential ingredients in an interactive classroom environment where students learn and practice combining business knowledge, technical knowledge, communication and analytical skills.
