Extracted From Yancey Family Records
The purpose of this web page is to provide historical information of genealogical value to those who are descendants of Negro slaves owned by members of the Yancey families during Pre-Civil War times. It is NOT the intention of the web-page creator to make any statement, opinion or judgment of a personal nature concerning Pre-Civil War slavery or of the injustices done to African-Americans as a result. The cold, hard fact is that, during the period of slavery, the majority (albeit, not all) of "White" Anglo Yanceys in the South were slave-owners. Legally, slaves were considered "property," and were valued as such in estate appraisals, transferred from one individual to another in deed transactions, and bequeathed to heirs in family wills. The language on this page which describes the disposition of those transactions is, for the most part, taken directly from original historical documents, and is not the wording of the web-page creator. To those Yanceys of color who may be engaged in genealocial research, It is hoped that the historical accounts provided on this site may, to some degree, aid in the very difficult task of tracing African-American ancestry during and prior to the era of slavery in America.
