BRISTOL -- An injured dog found half-buried in the ground last week may be euthanized, according to the humane society.

"Miracle," the Boston Terrier a woman found buried near C.R. 104 on Thursday, did not improve over the weekend, said Jill Price, director of the Humane Society of Elkhart County. A spinal injury suffered before the burial caused the dog to lose the use of its back legs and control of its bladder, Price said.

Price said Friday that the dog would remain at the veterinarian's office over the weekend and would be re-evaluated. On Monday, the news wasn't good.

"He's not doing very well. Based on the vet's suggestion we're going to have him euthanized. The vet doesn't think he's going to do very well," Price said.

"I know that's not what people want to hear but it's more complicated than people can imagine. The bottom line here is quality of life. Since he can't answer that question, we have to make the decision for him," she said. "At least he was found and he can be humanely cared for rather than dying in a hole."

A resident was hunting mushrooms last Thursday evening when she heard the dog crying and found him behind a vacant house. She got the dog out and took him to a relative's house.

What led to the dog's botched burial remains under investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, but someone claiming to own the dog contacted the shelter over the weekend.

"We had an owner come forward. It's just a bizarre story," Price said.

While the outcome wasn't what she hoped for, Price said she wanted to thank all the people who contacted the shelter offering assistance since last week.
