Jeff's Review of:
Scary Movie

July 7, 2000

2000, 1 hr 28 min., Rated R for strong crude sexual humor, nudity, language, drug use and violence.Dir: Keenen Ivory Wayans. Cast: Anna Faris (Cindy Campbell), Jon Abrahams (Bobby), Lochlyn Munro (Buffy's boyfriend), Shannon Elizabeth (Buffy), Shawn Wayans (Ray), Regina Hall (Brenda), Dave Sheridan (Doofy), Cheri Oteri (Gale Hailstorm), Marlon Wayans (Shorty), Carmen Electra (Drew).

Two summers ago There's Something About Mary set off a firestorm of competition of gross-out one-upsmanship, such as 1999's American Pie and this summer's Road Trip, Me Myself & Irene and now Scary Movie, a spoof of the teen horror flicks that have permeated the last decade.

Besides the main victims, Scream and The I Know What You Did Last Summer, the movie touches on several others, such as The Blair Witch Project and even bits of The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects and American Pie.

How far can you take the crude humor and keep it legal? I'm amazed it managed to garner an R rating instead of NC-17 with the amount of penises on screen. Yep, it is male nudity, not female, that is seen throughout the film, not to mention an abundance of the favorite obsession of these rauncy comedies, semen.

Too many jokes in Scary Movie we've seen before, such as seeing the film crew (Spaceballs) and the impenatrable chastity belt (Robin Hood: Men in Tights) and unflattering breasts (TSAM. When the very first joke was Carmen Electra farting, I took it as a bad sign. I grew out of the phase where that's funny long ago, when "Beavis and Butthead" ran fart jokes into the ground in the mid-90s.

Unlike my favorite movie spoofs, such as Airplane!, Hot Shots! and Naked Gun, the comedy is only due to raunchy sight gags and sex and drug jokes, not any sense of a script. I know, that sounds weird when talking about a spoof, but in the aforementioned films there was also great dialogue that I loved and memorized. After Scary Movie I cannot remember one good line, nor did I write one down on my pad, that is worth repeating for laughs among friends. Okay, there's one, when the sheriff tells the media that "The killings have been tragic, but shit happens."

One big detractor to Scary Movie was that the lead actress, Anna Faris as Cindy Campbell, spoofing Neve Campbell's role in Scream, wasn't sweet, wasn't cute, just a bore. You've most likely never heard of her, as she was in only two unknown films, Lovers Lane (1999) and Eden (1997), but she does try and emotes with the best of them, if that were a good thing.

Besides Farris, a few actors were good. One of the keys to a spoof is that the actors and actresses are supposed to play their roles as if it is a serious picture, that's what so much of the comedy relies on, that they're playing silliness with a straight face.

Shawn Wayans may fit that bill, as the quarterback with homosexual tendencies, only he doesn't know it. Kind of like Josh on "Veronica's Closet," but imagine if Josh grabbed his male friends' rears, his favorite song is "It's Raining Men" and he couldn't wait to get into the shower with his teammates.

Carmen Electra (looking mighty fetching) is star killed off early, a la Drew Barrymore in Scream. In fact, Electra's character is named Drew.

Shannon Elizabeth, as Buffy, is incredible eye candy, but of course she's a flashy whore, so she must die. Unfortunately, unlike her breakout in American Pie, Elizabeth keeps clothes on at all times. I guess now that she's a star her contract can demand such a thing. Oh, well.

Marlon Wayans has the easy task of playing the pothead Shorty, constantly high in Scary Movie, so much so that when shot in the chest he inhales the pot smoke coming out of his chest.

Cheri Oteri, spoofing Courtney Cox's role, as reporter Gale Hailstorm is underused, but since Cox's role was pretty much a spoof of overeager reporters already, how much could Oteri do?

I was amused to see that Principal Squiggy was played by the same loveable doofus from "Laverne and Shirley," a reference to Henry Winkler's character in Scream.

Apparently you should stay after the credits for a bonus scene. I saw the one at the beginning of the credits, but did not feel like sitting through the entire list. But I'm told that you should hang on to the very end.

I'm not saying that there weren't any funny moments. I admit that many times I laughed heartily, or was at least amused enough to crack a smile. It is just those raunchy moments that make me roll my eyes. But if you feel that the teen slasher flicks of the 90s are worth lampooning (and they are), then you'll get some laughs out of Scary Movie.

The verdict:
