Jeff's Review of:

Analyze That

Dec. 6, 2002

2002, 1 hr 35 min., Rated R for language and some sexual content.Dir: Harold Ramis. Cast: Robert De Niro (Paul Vitti), Billy Crystal (Dr. Ben Sobol), Lisa Kudrow (Laura Sobol), Joe Viterelli (Jelly), Reg Rogers (Raoul), Cathy Moriarty-Gentile (Patty LoPresti), Anthony LaPaglia (Anthony Bella).

Billy and Bobby are back, and now that weve done away with the introductions in Analyze This, we can just sit back and get straight to the fun in the sequel. Dont worry about plot, dont worry about character development, because it doesnt matter. When De Niros singing songs from West Side Story, you dont need anything else.

Crystal and De Niro naturally get the most banter, but theres plenty more from Jelly (Joe Viterelli) and we get to hang with the mob crew for intrigue and whackings. Cathy Moriarty, who apparently ingested all the weight that De Niro lost in Raging Bull, even gets in on the power struggle as the boss of the family business.

The most promising bit involves De Niro working as a consultant on Little Caesar, a Sopranos-like show with Anthony LePaglia as the star. Theres plenty of material to use here, as De Niro is right at home as the mob in a mob-like work, teaching LaPaglia that everything they say is ridiculous and not authentic.

Not much else to say, really. I laughed, I left, I didnt think much of it afterwards.

Overall, Ill vouch for it. Remember, its a process, as the movie reminds us as sort of a theme. Theres not a lot of there there, but its not about This, its about That, so the how and why dont matter much. Get it? I hope not. Just expect some hearty laughs and dont expect anything to change your life.

The verdict:
