Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamster
(Phodopus sungoris campbelli)

Interview with Kate's Critters

Positives of dwarf hamsters as pets?
All the fun of a syrian hamster in 1/3 the size!

Negatives of dwarf hamsters as pets?
When breeding, males can be territorial towards humans, and females become nippy when pregnant and nursing.

Do they have scent glands or an offensive smell?
No.

What is their average lifespan?
2 years.

Do they tolerate interaction?
Yes, in most cases.

What is their general personality, disposition, and attitude?
Very active, friendly (unless breeding or unsocialized) and love to run, run, run!

Are they sweet and petable, or mischievious and playful?
Most are very sweet and pettable, however there are a few grumpy, poorly bred dwarfs that give this species a bad name.

Are they hyper, or more sedate when being handled?
Most can't sit still and need to run around LOTS. Heandling is easy though, as they usually settle down quickly in the hand.

How destructive are they in their cage?
No very destructive, however without a wheel to run off all their energy, they can become snappy towards cagemates, etc.

Are their any problems associated with their claws?
no.

How messy are their droppings?
Very clean and dry.

Can they be litter box trained?
No, but they will often use a corner in their cage which makes clean up easier.

Can they be trained?
No.

What size cage do they need?
2-3 can live in a 5 gallon tank.

What is the best diet for them?
A quality brand of basic rodent mix.

What vaccinations/vet care do they require?
None, unless ill.

At what age would it be best to get one?
Just after they are weaned (4 weeks)

Are they difficult to breed?
No, however they can be canibalistic if inbred in their past.

What kind of person should own these animals?
These animals make good beginners pets, however care must be taken to aquire well bred ones, otherwise they can be snappy and mean, turning someone off a normally wonderful little hamster species.
