Dos Equis
History Lesson
In 1884, a German brewer named Wilhelm Hasse emigrated from his homeland
and established Moctezuma Brewing company in Mexico. He first brewed Dos
Equis Amber in 1897, blending his brewing heritage with the spirit of
the Mexican tradition. More than one hundred years after Hasse
founded the brewery in Mexico, Dos Equis Special Lager emerged, a new
beer launched as an extension of Dos Equis. Dos Equis, pronounced
(Dohs-Eh-Keys); translates in English as two-xs. The beer was
originally named Siglio XX, meaning 20th century, to signify the
approaching millennium. The brand carries the distinctive XX,
symbolizing a celebration of the last century, its revolutionary vision
and honoring the new millennium. Dos Equis Amber was first
imported to the U.S. in 1973 and was followed by Dos Equis Special Lager
in 1983. In 1996, both flavors were introduced in
draft and still remain one of the very few Mexican imports offered to
consumers in this package.
Lager
Dos Equis Special Lager is a refreshing, crisp, golden, lager style beer
imported from Mexico. Made with roasted malts, choice hops, a unique
strain of yeast and purified water, this distinctive brew is known
simply as Lager in its homeland.
Amber
Dos Equis Amber is a rich, full-bodied Mexican import with a
reddish-gold color and is made from the finest ingredients, representing
the brands traditional Mexican heritage. The history of Dos Equis Amber
is traced to the development of the popular Oktoberfest-style of Vienna
lager originally created during the mid-19th century.
