My journal entries only begin to describe my journey in Kenya, words and photos can not capture the true experience...

9:10pm     I was interrupted last night when 4 new volunteers came.  So last night we were invited to the vice-chairman of the football team’s house for dinner.  It was just amazing; chapates, fish, ugali, rice, tomatoes, onions, beef, bananas, oranges, sodas…a feast!  In their little village lives the vice-chairman his wife and children, his mother, brother and his family.  They were so welcoming and generous!  The only thing I noticed was that the women and children did not eat with us, making me the only woman.  I don’t know why this is.  The older men had all spent a lot of time in other bigger cities such as Kisii and Nakuma but have returned because they really like Muhuru Bay.

Now today was a very hectic day.  One volunteer was supposed to leave for Nairobi, but there were no matatus heading out of town.  They try to pay for a private taxi but he never shows.  Another volunteer isn’t feeling well only to find out that he has malaria…again.  I head to the house of a boy that we had met earlier, to meet his family, and there is cooked pumpkin, ground nuts, tilapia, tea, and sodas (keep in mind I just ate a huge lunch!)  But I eat more to be polite; they had prepared it all for me and the volunteer with malaria who couldn’t come.  After eating we took family photos, and when I develop them I will send them copies.  The family (like everyone here it seems) are so kind and are truly wonderful people.
