The W.P. and Minnie Wheeler family came to Hockley County to the Pettit community January 1, 1925. Dad and Tom Johnson had already been to the area in the fall of 1924 to build houses in preparation for bringing their families. Mom, Vernon, Alice, Bernice, Dovie and Fred came in the truck loaded with all of our household goods. Dad and I (Lucille) followed with two wagon, eight head of stock, and one cow and calf. We left from about eight miles south of Slaton [in Lubbock County] and the first day journeyed to Lubbock. That night we camped in the wagon yard. The second day brought us to Levelland.
Bernice attended school in a two-room schoolhouse located about two miles north and east of our house. The school had one teacher and was called Haskell School. In 1926 Pettit School was built where it stands today. W.P. Wheeler, John Fincannon and J.H. Pettit were the trustees and the school was named for Mr. Pettit at that time. We had both boys and girls basketball teams and were known as the Pettit Wildcats. At the end of the 1927-28 school year, the first graduating class had six graduates - Elmer Johnson, Vernon Wheeler, Bill McInturff, Emma Daniels, and Lucille Wheeler Wright.
On February 17, 1927, we welcomed one new member into the family. J.H. Wheeler was born in Hockley County and has continued to live in the county.
Church services were held in the school auditorium and Sunday afternoon singings brought folks from all around. Other entertainment consisted of picnics at Yellowhouse Canyon, Easter-egg hunts and one especially memorable event was the big rabbit drive. Farmers met early in the morning to get rid of rabbits that were destroying their crops. Other family members met the drivers at Whiteface Farms headquarters with lunch which was enjoyed by all. Another very "big day" came to the area with the coming of the railroad to Levelland. A big celebration was held and people from the entire area attended.
In 1934 tuberculosis claimed Vernon's life. Over the years other family members married and moved away. Alice and Bernice married brothers, Ray and Roy Gutherie. Dovie married Sammy Graham and all three couples moved to California to work in the defense plants. Jack spent years in the marines, then made his home in South Dakota. Fred and his wife own a floral shop in Cisco. They were astounded when their son and wife added triplet boys to their family! J.H. married Joy Van Doren Earl and still farms one of the original farms bought by our parents in 1925 for $21.00 per acre. I married Allen Wright and we had five children - Dale, Evelyn, Wayne, Wayland and Donna. The youngest was only a few months old when Allen was killed in an accident at the Pettit Gin in 1937. Years later, I married again and another daughter, Deanna, was born.
