An article in the Durham Herald (and printed in "From Tally-Ho to Stem) tells how Lewis Gooch, once a tobacco farmer, came to be the proprietor of a country store in the village of Stem. He started out working in the store in 1935. In 1938, he and L.D. Franklin, owner of the store, entered into a partnership and the name became "Franklin and Gooch." "Gooch entered another kind of partnership in 1940. The store had the contract to furnish groceries to the teachers' dormitory at nearby Stem School. As Gooch was making a delivery one day, he struck up a conversation with one of the teachers, Myrtice Harris, and it wasn't long before the two were married. Mrs. Gooch, who is from Macon in Warren County, remembers that her father was leery when she moved to Stem in 1937 to take the teaching job. 'When I came here,' she said, 'there wasn't a paved street in Stem.' "
Both Lewis Gooch and his wife Myrtice went on to serve terms as Mayor of Stem. Lewis Gooch worked full time in his store until 1973, when he fell and broke his shoulder. He was out of work for several months as a result. Myrtice Gooch was a graduate of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She taught fourth and sixth grades, each for two years before she married. After raising her family, in 1962 she returned to teaching, this time at Murdoch Center in Butner.
