JOTA 2000

The annual Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) and Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) is just about here. JOTA is to be held over the weekend of 21/22 October and will be located at Jerrabomberra this year. The 1s Jerrabomberra Scout Group is hosting this year's event and there are plenty of activity bases to keep the Cubs and Scouts entertained.

The Wireless Institute of Australia will be there, plus some ham radio operators to make sure that we can contact Scouts and Guides all over the world. The Rural Fire Brigade will also be there and they will be bringing their Emergency Forward Command post with them.

Dick Smith has donated 15 crystal radio kits to build. The first 15 groups to register will be able to take their kit home with them. There is very little set up required for this activity, as the kits require no soldering.

There will also be a leatherwork base for making woggles and key rings and a screen-printing base for printing T-shirts.

One of the most exciting bases will be the Pillow Fighting on a pole suspended approx 1 metre above the ground with crash hats on the heads and crash mats underneath.

We are also attempting to have a Video Conferencing base up and running and talking to the World Scout Headquarters in Geneva!

The Trailer-Push competition will truly challenge the Scouts, as they will have to come up with some novel idea on how to push an old trailer that has one wheel missing!. The Troops will be given some additional items that need to be loaded into the trailer for the big push.

The Obstacle Course is also expected to test the skill and fitness of the Cubs, Scouts and Guides. The course will consist of a tyre obstacle, a rope climb, a cargo net climb, a balance beam, crawling under an obstacle, suspended swing ropes (bear pit) and a rope bridge. A small scaling wall will also be erected if we have enough volunteers.

Each Scout attending will receive a Passport that will be marked at each of the bases. The scores for each event will be entered in the Passport and the teams with the best scores will be awarded special prizes. There will also be a trophy for the Outright Winner for the weekend.

The Cooking competition will be a really tough competition for the judges. Each Troop that stays overnight is to cook a three-course meal for one of the organising committee.

Here is a list of the trophies that will be presented:
