Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine
January 1998
Stories featured in this issue are:
- "Gone to Heaven Shouting" by Nina Kiriki Hoffman is
an interesting story that seems part SF, part Fantasy. It follows a
musician who travels the country, trying to locate his people who are
different from normal people. In one town, he unexpectedly encounters
the ghost of a child, waiting to be freed to join her parents. The
resolution is satisfying.
- "Night of the Fireflies" by Dale Bailey gives an
interesting look at the what the ultimate result of Democracy has on
writers.
- "The Singing Thing" by Lynn B. Coulter concerns a
farming woman who unexpectedly encounters a kind of devil buried in
her land. The story follows the usual 'free me and I will grant you
anything' plot but has a neat ending related to her need to find an
artistic outlet.
- "Current Affairs" by Steven R. Boyett looks at a host
of characters: a group of Tibetan monks, a developer, an
environmentalist and an unusual person who meet at the shore of a
Californian coast.
- "Our Complex Greenhouse" by Gregory Benford is a
science article that looks at the complex relationship between the
production and consumption of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse
gases. He also proposes his some ideas on how to minimise the impact
of global warming.
- "Reading the Bones" by Sheila Finch is an impressive
story. It starts off focusing on a language translated who is
addicted to an alien drug. Things start to go wrong when the alien
species on the planet attack a mansion and the linguist has no choice
but to bring two children to safety. Things start to become
interesting when it turns out that the alien species is on the verge
of creating a written language for themselves and the linguist is
determined to help them, even at the cost of his life.
