Statement:

The Deaf Ministries
Committee (DMC) under the Christian Education and Leadership Ministries Commission umbrella engage in
ministries of education and faith formation for persons and communities by
providing a dynamic ecumenical setting in which denominations and other
institutions gather related to and in support of Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Communities. DMC’s calling in
coordinating with ELMC is grounded in the biblical story, the gospel of Jesus
Christ, and the global vision of God’s shalom for all
creation.

DMC program committee
reflects the core values of this vision statement. Gospel-centered, spiritually
grounded and prophetic, they promote justice, diversity, models of shared
leadership, and Christian views on hospitality and
nurture.

The DMC partnerships enhance the involvement of
people beyond the program committee in broader networking relationships so that
members grow in faithfulness, theological understanding, and social
responsibility.
Position
Description:
Principal
Objectives/Purpose
- The special staff
member serves as a coordinator between Deaf Ministries Committee and
Christian Education and Leadership Ministries Commission whose aim is to provide resources,
consultation, training and support for the designated Christian ELMC in the National Council of Churches of Christ.
- The special staff
member, along with the committee and the Director, operates in such a
way as to enable ecumenical strategies in the ever-changing world of
denominational structures, priorities, and financial resources.

The special staff member, along with the committee and the Director, lifts a
prophetic vision helping the program committees address challenging issues
for undertaking new strategies and initiatives in
ministry.
- The special staff
member shares in the over-all administration of DMC caring for specific
administration and programmatic tasks as assigned by the committee with
agreement from the Director of ELMC.
- The special staff
member provides leadership and enables the work of the program
committees as assigned by the committee sharing with the Director of
ELMC.
- The special staff
member provides direct ministry knowledge in areas designated in
consultation with the committee and carrying onto the Director of
ELMC.

Provide
leadership to the committee
- Nurture and maintain
effective relationships with denominational staff and staff of affiliated
organizations in order to mobilize support of the committee’s
work.
- Serve as a representative
of and an advocate for the work of the committee.
- Develop strategies and
materials to interpret and promote the committee’s work.
- Support the
chair/convener(s) during meetings.
- Recruit and orient new and
replacement members.
- Assist the committee in
implementing its goals and strategies
- Consult with and provide
support as needed for projects generated by the committee
- Attend all necessary
meetings to maintain presence within the NCCC structure.
Organize
meetings of the committee and executive/steering committee
- Secure site and make local
arrangements: appropriate meeting space, meals, equipment, and
hospitality.
- Send committee members
announcement of meeting.
- Register all
participants.
- Prepare name-tags, display
material, handouts, etc.
- Assist the chair/executive
committee in planning the agenda
- Distribute minutes of
meetings within one month of the meeting.
Communication
- Write annual report for
Christian Education and Leadership Ministries Commission
- Update roster whenever
necessary and distribute to committee members and Christian
Education and Leadership Ministries Commission staff
- Submit information related
to the committee work to the director of Christian Education and Leadership Ministries Commission for
her/his reports to the NCCC executive board
- Send web site revisions to
NCCC web master or generate its own web site to connect the NCCC web
site.
- Answer all correspondence
related to the committee’s work
- Be available to the press
or other public media when requested
Clerical
- Arrange conference calls
- Maintain a current database of
membership
- Maintain resource file for
distribution
- Maintain archives for the
committee
- Do all copying, mailing, and shipping needed for
committee's work
Financial
- Request denominational annual
commitments
- Develop an annual budget for the
committee
- Keep ledger of all revenue and
expenditures for the committee
Other
Duties
- Participate in the annual
Christian Education and Leadership Ministries Commission program board meeting
- Participate in the annual
Christian Education and Leadership Ministries Commission independent contractors meeting
- In collaboration with the
designated committee leader and the director of Ministries in Christian
Education and Leadership, conduct a year-end review of the contract and an assessment of
needs for the coming year
Accountabilities:
·
The special staff member operates under the
policies of the NCCC and of ELMC with the coordination from the Deaf Ministries
Committee.
·
Progress and performance are reviewed by the Deaf
Ministries Committee and by the Director of ELMC on an annual basis.
·
Within performance objectives developed annually,
in consultation with the Deaf Ministries Committee and Director of ELMC, the
special staff member will be free to work toward agreed upon objectives,
reporting only on exceptions, revisions, or problems and on progress made toward
the results anticipated in these objectives.
Required
knowledge, Education or Expertise:
·
Preferred Graduate degree in church related
ministry or equivalent experience, with special knowledge in the areas covered
in the Deaf Ministries in Christian Education, and experiences in ecumenical and
denominational educational ministries at the judicatory level.
·
Specific skills needed include organizational
skills, ability to motivate and work with individuals, organize, administer and
coordinate committees; communication skills including sign language.
·
Travel is required and will be approximately 20%
of the time required for the job.
Terms
of Employment:
Salary is $6,000 a year and negotiable; serves at the
pleasure of the General Secretary and/or of the Director of ELMC.
