NOTE: Below are a list of roles and responsibilities for Deaf and Hearing participants that were approved at the DMC annual meetings in 1994 and 1995. Please use these lists to determine your own and other appointees' participation.

DEAF PARTICIPANTS:

HEARING PARTICIPANTS:

   

1. Be a liaison between NCC, DMC and your Deaf community (in your denomination/church) -- meaning report to Deaf community concerning the work of the DMC and report to the DMC on needs/wants of the Deaf community.

1. Advocate denominational support of Deaf participants in DMC and encourage Deaf and hard of hearing participants to become spokespeople for their churches and communities.

   

2. Have personal desire for involvement in Deaf ministries at the local and/or national levels.

2. Be an ally for the Deaf participants in the DMC annual meeting (making it possible for the Deaf to do their responsibilities as listed in the left column).

   

3. Be willing to work on developing own leadership skills to then model to other Deaf people.

3. Actively model respect for the language and culture of the Deaf Community.

   

4. Be willing to learn the "system" of your denomination (for example, how decisions are made) and maintain regular contact with denominational staff who are responsible for "Deaf Ministries" -- that is actively use the system.

4. Be able to encourage the decision-making process of the Deaf participants.

   

5. Be willing to learn the NCC "system" and actively use it.

5. Be able to share the hearing perspective in a constructive way.

   

6. Actively work to support the goals of DMC

6. Be able to let go of the temptation to exert power in Deaf Mnistries and enhance the Deaf Christian Way model as outlined in the DMC "Time to Listen" brochure.

   

7. Attempt to attend as many sessions of the DMC annual meeting as possible.
