Soldier

Trudging forward through the marshy field
Dreams of war flash by mixed with quick stings of fatigue
The sword swings aside, getting heavier with each step
And the breastplate and shield begin to encumber...

The edge of the forest fades from the mist and a single tree
Sitting, staring, eyes wide and expression frozen
Points the direction to death, war, doom absolute
To the battle in which you trudge so stubbornly toward...

Mud seeps around your boots and soaks your feet
But you know that the blood in your future will be even more uncomfortable
And soon your visions of glory fade
And are replaced with black disease...

Looking over your shoulder, you see your comrades
Marching just as you do, with frozen faces
There is nowhere to run, war is the only choice now
You wish you would have listened...

You can see your mother's crying face
And your father's understanding eyes, hiding sadness
And you wish you would have took your chance
To save your life from the death of war...
