Fall 2000 FloriVision
Save Florida: Arrive With Five!

Joy Bove Lurken, Director for Public Policy

That's five more registered voters each of us takes to the polls with us to vote on November 7, 2000! Since the historic March on Tallahassee a number of initiatives have been created. One of these is "Save Florida: Arrive with Five!" Its purpose is to mobilize and energize women and minorities to influence Florida's governmental bodies.

"Save Florida" is encouraging voters to sign a commitment card to "Arrive with Five" on Election Day. Branches, your Public Policy Chair will have these cards at your first meeting. A list of those who sign the cards will be sent to Vivian Burch, our Get-out-the-Vote Chair. Vivian is participating with Florida Women's Leadership Council, a multi-partisan coalition generated by the March on Tallahassee, committed to mobilizing the turnout of women voters at the polls.

Another suggestion by the group is to vote early either at Supervisor of Elections designated locations or by absentee ballot and then to volunteer with local groups to Get-out-the-Vote on November 7. (A note of special thanks to Jeanne Brooker for successfully obtaining the Get-out-the-Vote grant!)

Every vote counts. Make your voice - and the voices of 5 more voters -heard on Election Day.

AAUW is also encouraging members to visit nursing homes, help the registered voters there obtain absentee ballots, help them complete the ballots, and then see that the ballots are correctly mailed.

Let's make this the largest voter turn-out in modern history!
