ParrotletsParrotlets are neat little parrots about 4 inches in length. They think they are big birds and often attack things bigger than themselves whether alive or not (I had one female who loved attacking the remote control to the TV). They are often called "pocket parrots" due to their small size and due to the fact that when hanfed and tame, they will often play in and occasionally sleep in a persons shirt pocket! They are loveable little clowns that are very responsive to people. Male parrotlets especially often learn to talk. They are quite vocal and their voices are quite and well suited to apartments. The traits mentioned are why they are such popular pets. In addition they are fairly long lived and live an average of 20+ years. They are usually willing to try a variety of foods so it is easier to keep them healthy than some more finicky birds. I keep two species of parrotlet: Pacific (Forpus coelestis) and Green-Rumped (Forpus passerinus). Green-Rumped come in several sub species. My pair is F. p. deliciosus. My birds are quite young so I will not be able to see if they are interested in breeding for 6 months to a year. I am hoping to be able to offer handfed babies in the future. My Green-Rumped pair is quite bonded so babies may be a possibility later this year. The Pacific pair has not been put together yet as both are young babies.
