TYPES OF MOVEMENTS EXPLAINED
Diagrams for each type of movement
Flexion Bending, decreasing the angle between two bones (bringing them towards eachother). Examples of flexion are bending your elbow or bending your knee. Extension Increasing the angle between two bones (un-bending). Examples of extension are straightening your arm or knee after bending. Abduction Movement of the bone away from the mid-line of the body. An example of abduction is lifting your leg out to the side Adduction The movement of the bone toward the mid-line of the body. An example of adduction is bringing your leg back in from the side. |

Circumduction Movement of the bone so that the end turns in a circle and the bone makes the shape of a cone as it moves round. An example of circumduction is moving your arm in a small circle, you will notice your hand will be making a circle, but your whole arm will make a cone shape, thats circumduction. Rotation The movement of a bone around a central axis. An example is when you make a fist and twist it fromfrom side to side, this will rotate your whole arm. This example has both internal and external rotation. Supination Movement of the bones of the forearm so that the radius and ulna (see skeleton) are both parallel; for instance when you put your palms up. Pronation Crossing of the radius and ulna (see skeleton); for instance when you put your palms down. Inversion Movement of the sole of the foot inward at the ankle. Eversion Movement of the sole of the foot outward at the ankle. Dorsiflexion Raising the toes and foot towards the tibia (see skeleton) Plantarflexion Pointing of the toes. |
