Winch Tricks
The illustration above shows a simple anchor system you can use when there is nothing else available to anchor your winch line to.  The stakes should be at least 24"-36" long and made of good steel like re-bar or drill steel.  You can use wood stakes in a pinch tho.  Drive the frist stake into the ground at a 45 degree angle with the top of the stake leaning away from the winch.  Drive the second stake 5 feet beyond the first and in line.  Take a piece of 1/2" rope and tie one end to the top of the first stake and tie the other end to the bottom of the second stake.  A clove hitch on top works best and a taut-line hitch on the bottom will allow you to tighten the rope.  You can add as many stakes as needed depending on soil conditions and how much anchoring power you need.  Be sure to drive your stakes in solidly.  If you have an eye on the end of your winch line you can drive the first stake thru the eye when you start.
