Time capsule launched in Kota Kinabalu
By Arman Gunsika
KOTA KINABALU - The State government will ensure that all
development programmes are carefully planned and implemented
with all aspects considered.
Chief Minister Datuk Osu Haji Sukam said here that being
responsible for development of the State, the government will
leave no stone unturned more so in developing Kota Kinaba-lu
which is set to be officially proclaimed as a city come Feb 2,
next year.
He said careful planning and implementation of development
programmes especially in Kota Kinabalu and its surrounding
areas are vital in creating a city with its own identity. Tree
planting must be done properly to ensure several aspects
including greening, beautiful environment, peaceful and safe for
dwellers and visitors.
"A tropical rainforest city is the apt heritage to be passed down
to future generation," Datuk Osu said in his address in
officiating the Centennial Time Capsule ground breaking
ceremony held at the Sabah Museum ground here on Tuesday.
He said the time capsule is very appropriate and has its vital
significant since it is in conjunction with the birth of the Kota
Kinabalu city. It is closely related to Kota Kinabalu's position as
the state capital, centre of administration, commercial,
communication, industry as well as the main entry point of the
state.
Datuk Osu commented that the time capsule, expected to be
opened in the year 2100, would be a
priceless reference for the
future generation on the activities of the community of all
races, 100 years before them.
"If we are still alive on that day, definitely we will find countless
changes in the communities' way living, physical development
and the level of technologies among other things that are
beyond our imagination," he said.
He said the future generation in the new millennium would be
happy knowing that the current generation is very sensitive and
had left them a legacy of closed-knit and harmonious
community, when the mayor on that day unveiled the sealed
time capsule.
The chief minister again said that Sabah would not be lagging
behind in striving towards the vision 2020 by preparing and
installing fortified development strategies and actions. The
people must support the endeavour and not to miss the
opportunity in participating the historical event.
The time capsule project costing RM1 million is a reinforced
concrete vault and would be funded by selling 800 stainless
steel capsules available in four sizes, ranging from RM2,000 to
RM6,000. Fund is also being raised by the signature drive,
where each person can jot down their particulars inside a list
for RM5 each, and centennial official book of register where
anyone can purchase one page for RM500 and dedicate a
message in it for the future generation.
