Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns
Good ol' Amon Amarth are back with their latest slab of Viking Metal, Fate of Norns. I first discovered this band after hearing all the buzz over their last record, the mighty Versus The World, and ended up seeing them opening for Nile a few months later. I was intrigued by their very melodic yet simaltaniously crushing sound and after seeing them pull it off live I knew I was dealing with one of the most solid metal bands around.

Fate of Norns is not a huge departure from any of the bands previous works but it does showcase an even larger fascination with melody. I know you cant write an anthemic battle hym without a hook  or two but this record is packed with em'. The vocals are still extreme (rasp/growl), the drum work is still punishing but it seems that the guitars have stepped down a notch from the complexity of their last album and settled into a nice middle ground. When I say "nice" thats exactly what it sounds like, overtly pleasant melodic strumming.
Amon Amarth need to be commended for their songwriting skills. Although it seems they have decided to drown themselves in Iron Maiden harmonies, they still craft memorable/catchy songs that are metal to the bone. I think anyone looking to discover Amon Amarth will find the
Fate of Norns to be a perfect introduction and long time fans will be eager to add this to their collection no matter what.
