Cannibal Corpse - The Wretched Spawn
My first exposure to death metal was watching Cannibal Corpse play "Hammer Smashed Face" in Ace Ventura. I had no idea what the band in the movie was doing on stage or what the hell they were trying to say...I just thought it was cool. Its more than 10 years later and Cannibal Corpse is still the band that I associate most with death metal and with their latest album, The Wretched Spawn...I still think they are cool.
The record blasts off with "Severed Head Stoning."  A fast paced track that gets thing started off nicely. Many of the songs on this record are some of the most technical the band have ever written. "Frantic Disembowelment" is one such example and seems like something off an Exhumed record. This goes to show that the band hasn't been lagging  in the songwritting/growth department even after all these years. Still, Cannibal Corpse are at their best when they churn out the slower, heavier tracks like "Deceny Defied" or "Festering In the Crypt."
Corpsegrinder's voice is so different from Barnes its staggering. Barnes and the "Hammer Smashed Face" era Cannibal were all about wild, uncontrolled destruction and were all over the place. The current band hasnt lost any of their power or delivery, they just know how to control themselves. The vocals are still death metal but arent limited the burping contest champ sound of the past. The mighty Corpsegrinder utilizes some nice high end screams with his usual growl.
What else can I say about this album? Its great. Every performance is top notch (even the drummer Paul, who I used to think of as the Lars Ulrich of death metal), and the songwriting is possibly the best its ever been. It seems that after more than 15 years in the game, Cannibal Corpse still have a few tricks up their sleeves and wont stop brutalizing the planet until they run out.
