Between The Buried and Me - The Silent Circus
The Silent Circus is one potent mix of just about everything in extreme music and many other genres all thrown together. Death metal, hardcore, emo crap, grind, jazz...just about anything and everything you can think of is on this record. "Lost Perfection" is the first song on the disc and begins with a over the top death metal beginning that eventually morphs into hardcore breakdowns meets Pantera groove and filled with oddball tempo changes.
It almost makes you wonder how the hell they play this stuff live. If the musicianship wasn't so technical and meticulous you might think the band just made it up as they went along. The drumming is ferocious, filled with blast beats and double bass for days and the guitar work is amazing. There are some beautiful melodies on display here and the gentle guitar tones sound almost out of place after hearing such brutality on the tracks before.
The song that might sum Between The Buried and Me up the best is "Mordecai." After the opening onslaught the track transforms into an amazing ballad. The singer's clean vocals take over for the next song or two and could use a little work, but the band comes back with a vengeance on "Ad a dglgmur." There is a secret track at the end of the last song that sounds like Adam Sandler's Billy Madison character rocking out with the band.
I doubt this review helped you understand just how complicated this record is. Its all over the place musically but Between The Buried and Me have managed to make that work somehow. Fans of The Dillinger Escape Plan should eat this right up. Anyone else who is into any form of extreme music will find something they like here also.
