The Resurrected

Composed and Conducted by
Richard Band

A few notes from the composer...

Upon receiving this assignment, one of the elements I found most intriguing was how I could use a combination of orchestral instruments and electronics to create an ever-widening effect as they decended into the bowels beneath Charles Ward's house.

I loved the fact that as they decended to one level, there was still another lower level and another, and so on.

This allowed me to use such devices as having the clarinets, bassoons and celli echoing pizzicato effects, then turning into bass clarinets, contrabassoons and basses when reaching yet another level.

With each level reaching deeper and deeper, I attempted to have the music follow suit, getting lower, slower and more menacing but always trying to maintain a sense of impending discovery.

The orchestral devices mixed with the thematic structure climax upon reaching the lowest level, where the mutations resided, thus allowing me to once again reverse direction musically as they hurriedly ascend... escaping the inevitable fate of the ancient tomb.

The Arrival

Music by Richard Band

When the director David Schmoeller (The Seduction , Puppet Master) approached me to compose the music of The Arrival I knew in advance that melody would play an important role in the score.  David writes and directs in a melodic way which for a composer is great, for in the horror genre, one doesn't have too many opportunities to be melodic.

Since i've always been a strong believer in thematic development in film scoring, I create my own opportunities and always try to write some kind of melody or at least a motif to create an emotional base for the audience while viewing a film.

When the audience hears a theme in a film and it is repeated or embellished during it's course, it creates a sense of emotional continuity which when handled properly can enhance the experience immensely.

I hope that in listening to my music for The Arrival you will realize how the use of my melodies deal not just with scenes, but the entire context of the film and how the themes used at the begining impact you when developed and used in the film.
