Liner Notes

Born to a family of Venician composers in 1941, Giuseppe "Pino" Donaggio was destined to have music in his blood.  At the age of 10, he enrolled in the Prestigious Benedetto Marcello Conservatory to study the violin, then gave his first solo performance at 14, playing a Vivaldi concerto on national Italian radio.  Donaggio would move from the classics to pop in 1959, singing backup on a number of Paul Anka songs before achieving his biggest solo hit with 1963's "To Che Non Vivo", which Elvis Presley translated to the international success of "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me".

Donaggio made his boldest musical switch with 1973's soundtrack for Nicholas Roeg's "Don't Look Now", responding to the film's Venician settings with a disturbing and lovely score that garnered instant acclaim.  The soundtrack also won a fan with director Brian De Palma, who was about to embark on his first horror film.  Faced with the untimely death of Bernard Hermann, De Palma needed a composer who could match the master's symphonic intensity, and found his soulmate with Donaggio.  1976's "Carrie" began their chilling collaboration, the film's melodies swelling to original levels of erotic danger.

Though he would score such dramas as "Zelly & Me", "Tex", and "Kansas", "Carrie" had made thrillers Donaggio's forte.  As his gripping work for De Palma continued on "Dressed To Kill", "Blow-Out", and "Body Double",, the compser would also team with such notable genre filmmakers as Joe Dante ("Piranha", "The Howling") and David Schmoeller ("
Tourist Trap", "Catacombs", and "Crawlspace").  These pictures' ferocious beasts, razor-wielding psychos, and dazzling murders were terrifying enough, but it was Donaggio's dark melodies that put goosebumps on cinematic flesh, eerily lush passages that continued to show his musical growth.

Now Donaggio has turned "Meridian's" sensual visions and forbidding statues into one of his most atmospheric and menacing scores, effortlessly switching between orchestra and electronics.  Whether it's the brooding strings of "Kill This Beast", the church organ of "Confessional", or the synthesizer chorus of "Unholy Seduction", all of "Meridian's" passages build to a haunting musical tapestry, a grand reflection of the composers work that shows why Pino Donaggio is film scoring's master of suspense.

Charles Band on Meridian

"Among my favorites," said Band, "I always love to work in Europe, and Sherilyn Fenn is a real talent.  If people see a refection of my father in its style, I'm flattered.  He is still involved in every project underway toady.  I am his son.  His influence on me is everywhere."
