Manufacturers have reduced the hormone content of oral contraceptives due to serious side effects and health risks. "Now women are being encouraged to use these same pills, in multiple doses, as post-coital 'contraception,'" Dr. Johnston said. "The potential long-term impact of these high hormone doses, especially when used repeatedly, is worrisome and not being adequately addressed." ******* The makers of the Plan-B MAP highlight on their website that it is "not recommended for routine use as a contraceptive." Yet there is no way to prevent misuse and abuse if readily available without a prescription. ******* "Physical and clinical examinations by a physician are essential to good healthcare: to counsel patients on how to reliably avoid pregnancy, to determine sexually-transmitted diseases and abusive or coercive relationships, and to discuss health risks," said Dr. Johnston. "MAP does not protect against STDs and instead of preventing a pregnancy, may terminate it. Such serious issues cannot be adequately addressed at a pharmacist's counter." ******* MAP can function in one of three ways: by preventing ovulation; by preventing fertilization; or if fertilization has already occurred, it may prevent the newly created human being from implanting in the uterus, thus terminating the pregnancy. "The common description of the MAP as emergency contraception fails to accurately describe its possible abortifacient action and is misleading the public," Dr. Johnston said. "The confusion is aggravated by the current attempt to re-define pregnancy as occurring after implantation. It is a basic fact of human embryology that life begins at fertilization. Potential users of MAP must be told that this drug may abort a pregnancy so that they can make an informed decision. Will this message be communicated to them at the counter?" ******* On May 6, the US Food and Drug Administration rejected a plan to make MAP available over the counter at American pharmacies, citing a concern that it might be unsafe for girls under 16. "Does the Health Minister not have similar concerns about our Canadian adolescents? We urge the Minister to put the health of Canadian women and girls before political ideology and commercial interests and reject any attempt to distribute this potentially harmful abortifacient in Canada without a doctor's prescription." ******* For further information contact: Will Johnston, MD, President, Canadian Physicians for Life ******* Ph: 613-838-2577 ******* email: [email protected] ******* Canadian Physicians for Life is a charitable organization of Canadian physicians dedicated to the respect and ethical treatment of every human being, regardless of age or infirmity. ************************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 2 "MORNING AFTER PILL" OP-ED IN NATIONAL POST ******* From: From: Canadian Physicians for Life [email protected] via "John Hof" ******* Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 ******* (Note: This is an op-ed by Dr. Will Johnston, president of Canadian Physicians for Life, published in the electronic edition of Monday's National Post, May 24. Surely a woman deserves a chance for sober second thought in the cold light of dawn after being carried away by passion or suspecting betrayal by some imperfect birth control. After all, men risk no pregnancy -- while, apparently, a bracing jolt of sex hormone is all it takes to level that unjust playing field called human reproduction. ******* Let us assume (naively, I fear) that easy access to the morning-after pill will prove not to increase promiscuity, risky sexual behaviour, disease and long-range hormonal side effects. Would a reasonable person object purely to the prevention of unwanted pregnancy, especially following a rape? This is the straw man set up by MAP promoters to force us to a foregone conclusion, because the real debate is not at all about prevention but about the meaning of a newly formed human life. ******* Until it suited them otherwise, MAP promoters would have agreed with everyone else that a woman is pregnant when she conceives. Now they deny the pregnancy until after their drug acts to kill it by preventing embryo implantation in the womb. This plays fast and loose with the plain English of the word "prevent," and patronizes the woman who must make an ethical judgment, by assuming that she can't handle the truth. The fact is that the MAP is like shooting bullets through a closed door. If there happens to be someone on the other side, have you "prevented" their existence or just killed them? ******* This controversy would not exist except that some of us see inviolable worth in every human life no matter how small, while others do not. As our science rushes headlong into the age of embryo experimentation, this foundational ethical gap has become a chasm. We cannot let it go, we cannot overlook it, because the roots of our humanity are being shaken, the gale has begun to bend the tree. The next few decades will see great stresses placed on ancient human understandings of our origins and our purposes. We have launched ourselves into this adventure while tossing away the compass of respect for each life as worthy in itself, not as an object to be used. Just when our condition calls for humility, unprecedented licence is given to power. ******* Thus it is not a trifle when a pharmacist or doctor refuses to be part of the organized obfuscation required to call the MAP a contraceptive. Our society can ill afford to exclude persons of conscience from their professions, and women with hard choices to make deserve a clear look at the truth. ******* Will Johnston is a physician and president of Canadian Physicians for Life, Vancouver. ******* National Post 2004 ************************************************************************************************************************* ******* item 3 MORE SAFETY WARNINGS FOR ABORTION PILL ******* From: [email protected] http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGB4IVS8L1E.html ******* Date: Tue, 16 Nov 2004 ******* .c The Associated Press ******* WASHINGTON (AP) - An abortion pill implicated in the death of an 18-year-old California woman last fall will add new warnings linking RU-486 to the risk of serious bacterial infection. ******* Holly Patterson died Sept. 17, 2003, of septic shock caused by inflammation of the uterus. The teen died weeks after taking RU-486 to terminate an unplanned pregnancy. Anti-abortion activists seized upon her death in their campaign against these pills, including Danco Laboratories' product, Mifeprex. ******* The Food and Drug Administration approved Mifeprex in 2000 to terminate pregnancy up to 49 days after the beginning of the last menstrual cycle. The drug blocks progesterone, a hormone required to sustain a pregnancy. When followed by another medicine, misoprostol, Mifeprex terminates the pregnancy. ******* Mifeprex already carries a black box warning, the agency's most strident alert, to highlight other safety concerns. Now, the drug's black box warning will expand, adding information about the such rare but potentially life-threatening complications as serious bacterial infections and bleeding that can follow any abortion, including one induced by Mifeprex. ******* Since the drug was approved, the agency has received reports of serious bacterial infection, bleeding, ectopic pregnancies that have ruptured and death. The fatalities including a death from sepsis, a severe infection, recently reported to FDA, leading to the revised black box. ******* Serious bacterial infection may happen silently, without fever or tenderness - typical signs of infection - the label warns. The revised label also cautions health care providers that prolonged, heavy bleeding may warrant surgical intervention. ******* Women who have taken the drug should contact a doctor immediately if they suffer fever, abdominal pain and heavy bleeding, a medication guide aimed at consumers says. And the FDA counsels women to take their medication guide to any health care provider they visit to speed treatment. ******* Danco Laboratories did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. In an earlier statement, the company said 200,000 American women and more than 1 million women worldwide have used the pill since it was invented in France in the 1980s. ******* Concerned Women for America blasted the FDA for not pulling RU-486 from the market. ******* ``It is reported that another woman has died after taking the abortion drug RU-486, and the FDA's response is to change the drug's label,'' Wendy Wright, the group's senior policy director, said in a statement. ``This is a dangerous drug that deserves to be pulled off the market immediately.'' ******* The agency said it would continue to monitor the drug and may take further action. ******* At least two other American women who took the pill in the United States died, although the FDA says it is unclear if their deaths were directly related to the pill's use. ******* On the Net: FDA: http://www.fda.gov/ ******* (Incorporates a0673, BC-Morning-After Pill, to make important correction in slug, lead and headline: RU-486 is abortion pill, sted morning-after pill. However, a new British study shows that the drug, which can cause an abortion itself, has not lowered the number of surgical abortions. Researchers at Dundee, Edinburgh and Oxford Universities found giving women advanced supplies of the morning after pill did not reduce the abortion rate among that group of women. "Enthusiasm for distributing advanced supplies of emergency contraception may be misplaced as a strategy to reduce unintended pregnancy in the UK," explains Sally Wyke, of Dundee University and director of the Scottish School of Primary Care. Though having the drugs did not reduce abortions, Wyke claims that could happen if more women have the pills. Some 18,000 women between 16 and 29 participated in the study and received the morning-after drugs. Approximately 45 percent of the women used the sometimes-abortifacient and more than 4,500 gave their supply of the drugs to a friend during the course of the 28-month study. Motherhood has fallen to the immoral depths of selecting which child will live and which will die. Not because of the mother's health. Not because the fetus has a health problem. Not because of the sex of the unborn. Not even because the woman doesn't want to be pregnant. ******* This life-or-death choice for the unborn isn't called abortion. It's abortion when the baby is unwanted. This elegant murder has its own name that sounds sanitary and medical: "selective reduction." ******* It's simple. A woman, who wants to be pregnant, is pregnant. But she's pregnant with twins or triplets and, in some cases, more. Being a modern woman, she wants to choose how many children she has in each pregnancy. ******* Multiple births occur naturally. But with the advances in fertility treatments, drugs and techniques, the problems of infertility among couples and it would seem, the money to pay for the procedures the frequency of multiple births is growing. ******* With in vitro fertilization, when physicians implant fertilized and seemingly viable embryos in a woman, they usually put more in than the number of children desired. They assume some will not survive, and they're usually right. ******* But not always. If more implants begin to grow, the woman is told it would be better and safer for her if she decided how many she wants and the rest are "selectively reduced." ******* Nice words. Clean and abstract. It means that the tiny, unwanted babies growing inside the "mother" are killed. Mom then carries the rest to term, assuming all goes well. ******* If you wondered about the number of twins being born, now you know. A high percentage of them are here with some help from modern science. Certainly, not all were "selectively reduced" from their brothers and sisters, but the truth is, we'll never know. It isn't the kind of thing one would think a person would talk about publicly. ******* And then there's Amy Richards, if that's even her real name. But that's the name she used in the New York Times Magazine on July 18. The article's title barely hints at the callous, crass, selfishness of this woman: "When One Is Enough." ******* Written in the first person, Richards says she's 34, been living with a boyfriend (strange term for people of that age) for three years and using the pill. But she grew "tired" of taking it and stopped. She and the man decided that if she got pregnant, they would "have" the child. ******* Well, she did but then an early sonogram showed there were triplets conceived naturally, without fertility treatments. To hear her tell it, her world was about to end. She lamented the children would interfere with her freelance lecturing schedule she'd lose income, and she lived in a 5-story walk-up, so she might have to endure weeks of bed rest. She said her immediate response was "I cannot have triplets. I was not married." ******* And if he hadn't been playing house, she might not have found herself facing this situation. But this female wants what she wants on her terms. ******* She bemoaned she might have to move to Staten Island, never leave her house because she'd "have to care for these children," stuck "shopping only at Costco and buying big jars of mayonnaise." ******* She called them children, but never really considered giving birth to all of them. When she learned they were triplets, the first question she asked the doctor was about the possibility of "getting rid of one of them? Or two of them?" ******* Rid? How easy it was for her to choose killing. ******* The doctors confirmed it was possible. Another sonogram showed she was carrying twins and a stand alone, who was 3-days older. All appeared healthy and thriving. ******* The mother decided to "get rid" of the twins. It was a simple procedure which "involved a shot of potassium chloride to the heart of the fetus." ******* Now, it was a fetus not a "baby" or "child." ******* What about the boyfriend? Early on, he asked, "Shouldn't we consider having triplets?" She put him in his place: "This is why they say it's the woman's choice ..." ******* When looking at the sonogram of his three children, we're told he was thinking" "Oh, my gosh, there are three heartbeats. I can't believe we're about to make two disappear." ******* No, not disappear. Kill. ******* And they did. The doctor wouldn't let him stay to watch. Richards says she knows he "was offended." ******* What a surprise! They're about to kill two of his children and won't let him be there. Talk about an attitude of men being useless. ******* So she birthed the "stand alone" a boy. She says she's terrified of becoming pregnant again, but that she'd do it again if she had triplets again. If she had twins? "I don't know." ******* Reading this essay left me numb and weeping at the waste of life in the killing of those innocent children and furious that such a stonehearted ingrate has even one child. ******* Will she tell her son she killed his two siblings? Will the boyfriend hang around to see if more of his children will be killed? ******* What possessed the New York Times to print this? They should be ashamed. ******* But they have no shame and our society doesn't either. ******* Barbara Simpson, "The Babe in the Bunker" as she's known to her KSFO 560 radio talk-show audience in San Francisco, has a 20-year radio, television and newspaper career in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. ******************************************************************************************************************* ******* item 9 MORNING-AFTER PILL CAUSES ABORTION - Letter published in the St.Catharines Standard (Monday, April 25/2005)By Wayne Haroutunian ******* From: Robert A Jason ******* Re: the April 20 article Morning-after pill to be dispensed without prescription: ******* Readers have been misinformed by the Canadian Press story about the properties of the morning-after pill, not to mention pre-natal life. ******* The article states “if taken within 72 hours of intercourse, the drug blocks the pregnancy by preventing fertilized embryos from attaching to the uterine wall.? What the drug actually does is “end? the pregnancy. It does not necessarily “block? or prevent it. ******* What the drug blocks is implantation of the newly conceived human being to the uterine wall, thus causing abortion. ******* This is exactly why it is an abortifacient — an abortion pill — yet Dr. Vyta Senikas says in the article “the important thing is to remember that the medication itself is not an abortifacient.? ******* Furthermore, as a matter of biology, there is no such thing as a fertilized embryo. An embryo (tiny human) is the result of fertilization of the female egg by the male sperm. For further understanding, in the same way that we commonly refer to baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult in after-birth terms, embryo is one of our early stage pre-birth terms. ******* I believe what may be going on here is an attempt by the pro-morning-after-pill community to redefine the beginning of life as an event that occurs at time of implantation, versus the scientifically determined time of conception (fertilization) in order to escape the reality of abortion. ******* Acceptance of this new definition would make it easier to dispense this drug and, of course, enhance its financial viability. ******* However, a new definition cannot change the fact that the morning-after pill can destroy a newly created life, which is not without consequence to women’s wellbeing, together with other negative side effects this high-dose version of the birth-control pill will have on women’s health. Women need to be informed of all these facts. ******* Wayne Haroutunian, President, St. Catharines Right to Life, King Street, St. Catharines ON ******************************************************************************** ******* item 10 DR. WILL JOHNSTON'S LETTER IN NATIONAL POST RE: "MORNING AFTER" PILL - Implications of the morning-after pill ******* From: Canadian Physicians for Life [email protected] via Robert A Jason ******* Sent: Friday, April 29, 2005 ******* National Post, Tuesday, April 26, 2005 ******* Re: Health Canada Approves Morning-After Pill For Sale Over-The-Counter, April 21. ******* The Health Canada regulation changes that have now made the drug levonorgestrel, known as Plan B or the morning-after pill (MAP), available without a doctor's prescription generated a predictable flurry of sound bites. There I was on the CTV national news saying, "Taking these pills is like shooting bullets through a closed door," followed by a woman from Planned Parenthood saying, "Physicians for Life and Pharmacists for Life are just basically anti-choice." That was about seven seconds for each side. ******* The five-minute version of my position is that many promoters of the MAP have fallen short of some basic truth-in-advertising standards. They claim their drug blocks uterine implantation of an egg, rather than a very small human being containing fully 46 chromosomes in each of its hundreds of cells. Yet never in the history of human biology has "an egg implanted in the uterus," to quote the same distressing misinformation in a patient's guide published by no less than the Canadian Pharmacists Association. ******* Henry Morgentaler used to call an unborn child with fingers and toes a "blob of tissue" because it was only 10 weeks from conception and he wanted to abort it -- and it was going to look like that anyway when he was finished with it. Now we have Planned Parenthood, an organization that refuses to admit that there are little people out there inside those pregnant tummies, and that claims we are "anti-choice" if we object to an intentional hormonal assault on an "egg." ******* I think the defining human task of the next century will be to recognize the humanity of even the smallest homo sapiens from the moment of conception. That will mean resisting the temptation to declare open season on the embryo before implantation or in the test tube. ******* The horrors committed by the Nazis required prior decades of respectable academic promotion of the idea of lives of different value. Their criteria were race and fitness, ours are size and wantedness. Their ideals can be seen in the words of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger: "The Jewish people and Italian families who are filling the insane asylums ... these are the ones the taxpayers have to pay for the upkeep of ... the enormous expense of the state is increasing because of the multiplication of the unfit." ******* Our ideals focus on sexual freedom and personal health. Through these many decades, the fatal flaw endures: the implicit idea that we can declare some people to be less than human persons and go on to prosper, indeed that this declaration is the very key to our future prosperity. It is a flaw that will once again produce terrible consequences. ******* Will Johnston, Vancouver family physician and president of Canadian Physicians for Life. ******* © National Post 2005 ******************************************************************************************************** ******* item 11 FREEDOM OF INFORMATION DOCUMENTS REVEAL DEATHS AND HOSPITALIZATIONS DUE TO RU-486 ******* From: "LifeSite News" via ******* Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 6:54 PM ******* WASHINGTON, February 19, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Food and Drug Administration data obtained by Cybercast News Service (CNSNews.com) through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) has revealed deaths and hospitalizations resulting from RU-486. While the documentation on adverse side effects using RU-486 show only 33 individual reports during a four year period between November 1997 and November 2001, five cases involved death. ******* The results are from patients taking one or both of the two-drugs which make up RU-486 thus they include patients taking the drugs for reasons other than abortion. Four men were among the 33 cases. Of the five deaths reported listing RU-486 or one of its components as the primary suspected cause of death, three were men. Cybercast reports that other adverse effects for which doctors listed RU-486 as the primary suspect included nausea, dizziness, excessive bleeding, life-threatening blood clots and infection, and respiratory distress. Beyond the two women who died, 22 women in the report required hospitalization or "intervention to prevent permanent impairment," and five experienced "life threatening" or "other" medical outcomes. ******* It is acknowledged by both sides of the abortion debate that the FDA cases are underreported. While drug manufacturers are required to report such results to the FDA, doctors are not required to report their findings to the drug manufacturers. John Diggs, a pro-life Massachusetts doctor and advisor to the Family Research Council said, "Any drug like this that's causing those number of deaths under any other circumstances would be withdrawn or at least studied. But this one was pushed through under fast track, meaning that it bypassed all the usual studies and the time and the peer review to make sure that a drug is safe." ******* See the Cybercast News report: http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewCulture.asp?Page=\Culture\archive\200202\CUL20020219a.html ******************************************************************************************************** ******* item 12 PRO-LIFE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS - PONTIUS PILATES? by JILL STANEK 2005 WorldNetDaily.com ******* From: Sue W. via "Suzanne Fortin" ******* Date: Sat, 14 May 2005 ******* Induced-labor abortion is one of the best-kept secrets within American hospitals. This heinous procedure is committed not only in abortion strongholds like New York City and Chicago, but also in unexpected places like Valparaiso, Ind., Lancaster, Pa., Waukesha, Wis., and Columbus, Ohio – and not just in public and secular hospitals, but also in protestant and Catholic hospitals. ******* I was shook recently when a traveling labor-and-delivery nurse told me she had never worked at a hospital that didn't commit induced-labor abortion. I knew it was performed on a wider scale than publicly realized, but even I didn't understand how pervasively. ******* When I stumbled on induced-labor abortion at the hospital where I worked, and objected, my two bosses (both Catholic) told me they didn't develop the procedure, it had been around awhile. It turned out my hospital had committed induced-labor birth abortion for 20 years – incredibly, with no written policy. ******* I reflected on the thousands of nurses, doctors, medical students, residents, nursing assistants, cleaning personnel, pharmacists, department secretaries and chaplains who knew before me, but never said a word. ******* I became disgusted with staff around me who professed to be pro-life, but thought it was enough not to participate. Afraid to speak out and embarrassed when the hospital was publicly exposed, they defensively circled the wagons together with pro-aborts. A few even turned on me and said I should just shut up and leave. ******* It was as Oswald Chambers noted, "People who are totally consumed with idealistic principles rarely do anything." He was right. These supposed pro-lifers thought it was enough not to do something. But it's not. ******* Today, I am always amazed by pro-life medical professionals who approach me after one of my speeches to cluck their tongues at the miserable state of affairs, yet do not even know if their own hospital aborts, or worse, know and think that since they don't participate or work in "that" department, it's acceptable. But it's not. ******* Pro-life medical professionals should consider it a prerequisite to check an institution's abortion policy before accepting employment, something I naively didn't do because my hospital was supposedly Christian. ******* If a hospital is involved in abortion, a pro-lifer should walk away and say why. Working at a pro-abortion institution means a segment of one's salary comes from the blood of abortion. And just physically being there, no matter where, frees up someone else to participate in the act. ******* The same holds true when applying to work for doctors, even those not involved in women's health. They must be asked their position on abortion and euthanasia. It is foolish to think a pro-death heart specialist or pediatrician, for instance, will give the same conscientious care as a pro-lifer. The answer to the life question reveals whether someone's morality and psyche are intact, or, as the Bible says, whether his or her "whole head is infected" (Isaiah 1:5). ******* If pro-life medical professionals would take this proactive step, we could shut down much of abortion without there ever having to be a change of law. ******* This is because there is a growing critical shortage of doctors and nurses. The Center for Nursing Advocacy reported, "The U.S. continues to face an aging nursing workforce and an explosion in the need for skilled nursing, as the baby boom generation starts to retire, and health care and care technology grow increasingly complex." USA Today reported, "A shortage of physicians ... will worsen as 79 million baby boomers reach retirement age and demand more medical care unless the nation starts producing more doctors." ******* Note the irony that abortion has contributed to the shortage of health care workers. ******* If pro-life medical professionals would work solely for pro-life hospitals and doctors, we would force pro-abortion institutions to change their policies or go under. We would also strengthen pro-life medical institutions. ******* And if you're reading this, and you work or have worked at a hospital committing induced-labor abortion, you should know the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services came out with a very strong statement on April 22 saying it would "aggressively enforce" the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, which would effectively stop the practice of induced-labor abortion. You must contact HHS and tell the people there what you know. Period. ******* Two thousand years ago, a segment of the population wanted legal permission to murder an innocent man. Another segment of the population stood against it. Then there was Pontius Pilate. He didn't want the innocent person killed, but also didn't want to interfere with the bloodthirsty crowd's "choice." So he proclaimed his displeasure, yet washed his hands of the entire matter. ******* How did it come to be that in America babies are aborted alive and shelved to die in hospital-soiled utility rooms? ******* Too many Pontius Pilate medical professionals. ******* Jill Stanek fought to stop "live-birth abortion" after witnessing one as a registered nurse at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill. In 2002, President Bush asked Jill to attend his signing of the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. In January 2003, World Magazine named Jill one of the 30 most prominent pro-life leaders of the past 30 years. ******* For more information see: http://abortion-not.org ******* Visit the Catholic Information Net at: http://www.cin.org ******************************************************************************************************** ******* item 13 SALES SOAR FOR MORNING-AFTER PILL - By DAVID CRARY, Associated Press National Writer ******* NEW YORK - In the year since it was approved for over-the-counter sales, the morning-after pill has become a huge commercial success for its manufacturer, but its popularity and solid safety record haven't deterred critics from seeking to overturn the milestone ruling ******* The pill, marketed by Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. as Plan B, was the focus of bitter debate for three years. After repeated delays, the Food and Drug Administration declared on Aug. 24, 2006 that customers 18 and older should be able to buy it in pharmacies without a prescription. Barr began distributing the over-the-counter version last November, and all national pharmacy chains now stock it. The company projects that sales of Plan B will total about $80 million for 2007, almost double the total for 2006 and up eightfold from 2004, when Barr acquired the product as a prescription-only drug. ******* "Overall, we've been very pleased with the acceptance," said Barr spokeswoman Carol Cox. "The product may not be for everyone but if you find yourself in a position to need it, absolutely it should be available." ******* Despite the booming sales, and evidence that the pill is safe if properly used, critics remain active. ******* A coalition of conservative groups, including the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America, has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington seeking to reverse the FDA ruling. The groups contend that the FDA acted unwisely under political pressure and lacked authority to approve the same drug for both over-the-counter and prescription-only distribution based on the user's age. ******* "Barr may be making a healthy profit, but women are paying the price," said Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America, who believes Plan B is less effective that its backers assert. ******* Barr says Plan B, a high dose of a drug found in many regular birth-control pills, can lower the risk of pregnancy by up to 89 percent if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. ******* Since the FDA ruling, there have been extensive efforts by advocacy groups and some politicians to ensure widespread availability of Plan B. _Several states have enacted laws to improve rape survivors' access to the medication in hospital emergency rooms; a similar bill has been introduced in Congress. _Also in Congress, supporters of Plan B have introduced legislation to ensure that women serving in the U.S. military overseas have access to the pills at their bases. The measure's backers say servicewomen and military doctors often can't obtain the medication when it's needed. _Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America and their allies have campaigned to educate women about Plan B and pressure national pharmacy chains to make it readily available. Overall, activists are pleased with the chains' response, but they say women continue to encounter pharmacies which refuse to stock Plan B and individual employees who, for reasons of conscience, refuse to sell it. ******* "Many women still don't know it's available," said NARAL's president, Nancy Keenan. "There's a lot of education that needs to be done." ******* During three years of FDA deliberations over Plan B, many claims were made about it. Supporters said it would reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and abortions; opponents said it would fuel teenage promiscuity because girls under 18 could obtain it from an older person male or female buying it over-the-counter on their behalf. ******* Thus far, there have been several studies casting doubt on all these claims although activists of varying views say there is a shortage of authoritative research. Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, believes Plan B will contribute to a measurable drop in unintended pregnancies once accurate information about it spreads widely among American women. ******* "We're talking about very mainstream health care here," Richards said. "And yet there is a fringe group of folks in this country who seem determined to prevent women from getting emergency contraception." ******* Some critics including Roman Catholic leaders consider the pill tantamount to abortion, although Barr says it has no effect on women who are already pregnant. Catholic bishops in Connecticut protested in May when the state legislature passed a bill requiring all hospitals, including Catholic facilities, to offer Plan B to rape victims ******* Deirdre McQuade, planning director for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, also expressed concern about pharmacy employees, saying they should have the right to refuse to sell Plan B for reasons of conscience. Some states have passed laws to protect this right of refusal. ******* "Pregnancy is not a disease," McQuade said. "There is no absolute duty to dispense a non-therapeutic drug, but there is a basic civil right of conscience." *******************************************************************************************************
