First Generation
1. Wright Scogin was born on 15 Feb 1773. He died in 1838 in Greene Co., Georgia. He was counted in a census in 1820 in Greene Co., Georgia. He was counted in a census in 1830 in Greene Co., Georgia.
No proof has been found to document the earlier history of this Scogin family. Some Scogin/Scoggins researchers speculate that Wright Scogin was the brother of the John Scogin who lived in the Abbeville District of South Carolina and that their parents were John Scogin and Ann Waggoner.
However, the deed books and tax records of Wilkes Co., Ga. sem to indicate that Wright's father more likely was the William Scoggins who was already living in Wilkes County before 1789. He may also have been related to Alexander Scogin who died in Oglethorpe County, Ga. in 1811. Wilkes Co. was one of the first counties created in Georgia and was a very large county. As settlers moved into the state, the larger counties were divided to make new, smaller counties. Oglethorpe County was one of those created from Wilkes County. On the 1797 tax list of Oglethorpe County, Wright Scogin was listed as #2 in Capt. McElroy's district. #6 was a Smith Scogins, probably a brother to Wright Scogin. They were both living on Kettle Creek. As late as 1800. Smith Scoggins was still living on Kettle Creek. Several years later he moved to Baldwin Co., Ga. where he died about 1820.
Wright married Nancy on 14 May 1796. Nancy was born in 1777. She died on 18 Feb 1838 in Greene Co., Georgia. They had the following children:

3. Edna "Edney" Scoggins (Wright) was born about 1801 in Georgia. Edna joined the Bethesda Baptist Church in Greene County on 19 April 1828. The church minutes say that she and her husband were granted letters of dismissal on 20 Feb 1830. Their letters were returned to the church on 17 March 1832. Edna and her husband, along with her brother John T. were in conflict with Jesse Asbury, another member of the church, in Jan. and Feb. 1836. The conflict was reportedly resolved by 20 Feb. but Edna and her husband left the church. In 1839, Edna Williams was one of the founding members of the Penfield Church.

Scoggins served in Copany K of the 12th Regiment, Georgia Infantry .The 12th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in June, 1861, at Richmond, Virginia. Its members were from the counties of Sumter, Jones, Macon, Calhoun, Muscogee, Dooly, Putnam, Bibb, Lowndes, and Marion. Moving to Western Virginia, the unit was assigned to H.R. Jackson's command and shared in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign. Later it served in General E. Johnson's, Elzey's, Trimble's, Doles', and Cook's Brigade. The 12th participated in Jackson's Valley Campaign, then fought with the Army of Northern Virginia form the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. Later it participated in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment lost 175 at McDowell, 45 at Groveton, and 59 at Sharpsburg. Its casualties were 12 killed and 58 wounded at Chancellorsville and sixteen percent of the 327 engaged at Gettysburg. Only 5 officers and 60 men surrendered in April, 1865. It is likely he died during the Civil War period.

This regiment lost 4 killed and 36 wounded at Cross Keys and Port Republic, had 21 killed [one of which was Wm. J. Scoggins] and 55 wounded at Sharpsburg and 25 killed and 57 wounded at Chancellorsville. It reported 14 casualties at Second Winchester, lost twenty-one percent of the 347 engaged at Gettysburg, and had 130 captured at Rappahannock Station. Only 4 officers and 64 men surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia.

Before he died, Green Berry Scoggins wrote an article for a book titled "Reminiscences of the Boys in Grey." It read in part, " ... Enlisted in the Confederate Army on June 1, 1861 in Dalesville, Ala., as private in Company E, Fifteenth Alabama Infantry ... Was shot through the left thigh at Cold Harbor and had to be carried from the field. Was wounded again at Broun's [sic] Ferry, Tenn. on Oct. 27, 1863 shot throught the thigh from which I am still suffering. Was never a prisoner. Was in battles of Cross Keys, Cold Harbor, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg or Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Battle of Mount Chicamauga, Broun's Ferry, Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House. ... " After the war he moved to Texas where he bought a section and a half of land in Titus County. Out of this 850 acres he donated land for the building of the Scoggins Chapel School.

"C.R." Scroggins served in the 27th Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War. The 27th Infantry Regiment was organized during the winter of 1861-1862. Its members were raised in the parishes of East Feliciana, Iberville, Rapides, Winn, Bienville, Caddo, and Bossier. This unit was assigned to General Shoup's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and during the long siege of Vicksburg it lost 58 killed and 96 wounded. After the exchange it served in A. Thomas' Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department and was active in various conflicts in Louisiana. In July, 1862, the regiment had 26 officers and 249 men present for duty, but only a remnant disbanded in the spring of 1865. Its commanders were Colonel Leon D. Marks and A.S.Norwood, Lieutenant Colonel L.L. McLaurin, and Major George Tucker.

The name of this family has been spelled several different ways over the years - Autman, Aultman, Altman, Aughtmon - but today it is spelled Aughtman. Records show that Thomas "Autman" served in Co. F of the 7th Infantry Regiment in the army of the state of South Carolina during the Civil War. This unit was made up of men from Edgefield Co., S.C. John R. Autman, a possible brother to Thomas, also served in this company. The story of that regiment includes the names of some of the fiercest battles fought in the Civil War.
Thomas left his home in South Carolina and made his way to Covington Co., Ala. shortly after the War ended. He was listed as the head of the household on Covington County censuses from 1870 (where Lucy's name was written as "Lucinda") thru 1920. When the 1880 census was taken Thomas "Altman" and his family were living in Beat 1 which included the town of Andalusia. In addition to his wife and seven children, Thomas' brother-in-law "C.Strogin" [C. Scroggins] was also living with them.
There is a deed showing Thomas acquiring land in the Gantt area in 1894. There is speculation he donated the land for the Gantt cemetery. He and a number of his descendants are buried there. The 1920 census showed Thomas owning his own home although it was mortgaged at the time. Thomas was remembered as having a dark complexion and curly hair, short of stature and speaking with a "heavy" accent. According to other family memories it is possible he was of German and Jewish descent. The "heavy accent" could have been no more than a South Carolina brough. Another family memory is of the organ played by by Lucy.
