MUD, GLORIOUS MUD

Extracted from 'The Wonderful Weald and the search for the crock of gold.' by Arthur Becket. Being a description of the state of the roads in Sussex, 18th/early 19th century.

"..
.to the depth of mud that lay over the roads was due to the fact that, of their several kinds, the oxen, the swine, the women and all other animals of Sussex had longer legs than others, which advantage came to them through overmuch pulling of those members of their bodies from the mud, by which continuous action the muscles become stretched and the bones lengthened."

So ladies, beware the mud and your legs if you go to Sussex.

thanks to Dawn for this delightful little tale.
