Please tell me why its true
that lions in the zoo,
when locked up in their cages
do not fall prey to rages.
Or maybe I am wrong
and they've been mad so long,
that we no more can see
their pain and agony.
Caught in perpetual sadness
by our ongoing badness,
perhaps they only show
their tears after we go.
And when the guards return
some friendly and some stern,
perhaps the lions hide
their fury through their pride.
