To Doubt

Based on "To Sleep" by Lord Alfred Douglas

Ah, Doubt, thou hast done thy task
By turning Truth not on its head but to its side
Where spoilt it stands near Love and Pride
And covers up its sparkle 'neath a mask.
I know the summons to the twilight zone
Of frail truthlets, that drift asunder
When thy drumbeat rolls as stormy thunder
Smashing Truth, leaving it overthrown.

My soul is sick with doubting, give it Peace.
Ah, Doubt, stay thy hand awhile from me
Pass on to those whose Truth is strong
Whose Love and Pride know not a crease
Hold back thy noxious incense, let me see
Truth, may it fresh to Joy belong.
