The township contains thirty-six full sections of land. The first settlement was made in 179, by Jeremiah Riggs, who located and built the first cabin on section 16, where the village of Pageville is now situated. Other settlers soon followed, whose names are still remembered, viz: Joshua Johnson, John Erwin, James and Rebecca Gibson, Joseph and Elizabeth (nee Waters) Brooks, Richard and Elizabeth Reeves, John and Awzina Forest, Thomas and Catherine (Harmon) Barton, John and Nellie (Shepard) Douglas, Jessie and Lydia (Mosier) Page, Robert and Ruth (Saulto) Townsend, Samuel and Hannah (Hardin) Downing, Leonard and Elizabeth (Louks) Hedrick, Jacob and Elizabeth (Tar) Darst, Russell and Eunice (Hays) French, William and Sarah (Witham) Stevens, Martin and Hannah (Perkins) Ray, Thomas and Jane (Mankin) Dye, Zachariah and Mary (Wells) Bradfield, Martin and Mary (Bradfield) Dye, Mary Riggs, second wife of Martin Dye, Robert and Elizabeth (Bradfield) Turner. All of the above named were settlers previous to 1821."
