"Dewey Atwood, Former Deputy Sheriff, Dies

Dewey Atwood, 71, a former Columbus and Pittsburg resident, died Saturday in Asbury Park, N.J. He had moved from Pittsburg to Asbury Park in June. He had been in a hospital there for the past month.
Mr. Atwood was born April 29, 1898, in Scammon. He served as a deputy under Cherokee County Sheriff John Kretchet in the early 1930's and was a detective for the Frisco Railroad in Kansas City for many years. He retired six years ago and moved to Pittsburg.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian church in Pittsburg, Scammon Masonic Lodge No. 351 being a Past Master, the Fort Scott Consistory, The Mirza Shrine and The Kansas Peace Officer Association.
He was also survived by one son, William R. Atwood, Wayside, N.J. and two granddaughters.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Brenner mortuary chapel in Pittsburg with Dr. Homer Keith officiating.
Burial will be in the Highland Park cemetery.
Masonic services will be held at the grave.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 o'clock tonight in the Brenner chapel.".
