ELIZA  ESTHER  MARRIAGE  was my great grandmother. She married William Phillips at Spittalfields in England. Around 1877 or 1878 William came to the US. In 1892 Eliza followed with her three children. When here the bloom was off the marriage. They had one more child, Walter George Phillips in 1894. In 1900 she divorced William.

I have the testimony of the divorce hearing and there is one thing that troubles me. During the testimony Eliza is being asked questions by her attorney, Harry J. Mowrey. She repeatedly asserts that at various times in their marriqage William has "threatened to take my life", and that he has failed to support she and the children. The testimony continues as follows with Mr. Mowrey asking about her children:

  1. Q. How old is Susie?

  2. A. Susie is seventeen.
  3. Q. Is Susie married?
  4. A. Yes sir.
  5. Q. Where is William?
  6. A. He is in Pierre.
  7. Q. And where is Walter George?
  8. A. He is in Canada on a farm there, Mr. Walton, (Pastor of Trunity Episcopal Church, Watertown, Codington, SD, at the time.) put him there for which I have to pay $50.00 a year.

I have no knowledge of the farm statement and questions to the church yield no answers. I can only assume he was put there for his own safety but if anyone has knowledge of this farm I would certainly like to hear from them about it.

Eliza and her son, Walter George, appear in the 1900 census of Codington County, enumerated 11 JUN 1900, as boarders in the home of Seymour and Jane Packer at North Ontario Street.

On 17 SEP 1903 Eliza made an application to marry Lon Fuller. The License was issued the same day and on that same day a Justice of the Peace named F. A. Countryman united the couple in marriage. At some point Eliza moved to Mankato, Blue Earth, MN. I don’t yet know when that was but I do know Fuller preceeded her in death. She is listed as a widow in the Mankato City Directory.

For Eliza and William's children see the Phillips page.

20 August 1892, Eliza, with three of her children, William Roswell, Elizabeth, and Susan arrived at Quebec aboard the S.S. Vancouver having left Liverpool, England on 11 AUG 1892. They traveled by rail to Port Huron, MI.

Eliza died 09 JUN 1936 and was laid to rest at the Pilgrim's Home cemetery at Mankato, Blue Earth, MN. Eliza's obituary.
