A Hard Fought Win For The Ravens!!

Gladesville Ravens 1
PHD 0
(28/03/2009)

After over 3 months of pre-season training the first competition game had finally arrived. The Ravens were to kick off their season against the newly promoted Pacific Hills Dural and the black and whites knew they would have to be devilishly good if they were to chalk up a win against the boys from Hillsong.

The Ravens lined up with a 4-4-2 formation Dave Hunt at right back, Stu Mac in the guts and Opp on the left whilst Gio swept. Across the middle of the park we had Panucci on the left, Damo and Rick in the middle and Dan on the right and upfront Julz was partnered by Floppy.

The God Squad adopted a 3-5-2 formation and from the kick off the extra man in the middle of the park caused the black and whites a few headaches, and Aman had to get down smartly to stop a heavenly drive from the edge of the box.

Down the other end and a Panucci switch of play found Dan free on the right, who fed the ball into Julzs feet. He shrugged off several stray boots, to turn and hit a left footed shot goalwards. It lacked power though and PHDs custodian Saint Peter, stood firm in front of the Pearly Gates. Moments later Panucci whipped in a right footed cross from the left which found Floppy free at the far post. His header lacked power though and again Saint Peter was able to hold comfortably.

Half time arrived and the Ravens were forced to make changes as Floppy succumbed to a calf strain and Opps troublesome groin flared up again. The talk was positive and the Ravens knew if they kept it tight at the back a chance or two would come their way. Tom Cunningham came on for Opp and DB replaced Floppy, as Rick Gio was pushed up front and Joel switched to left back, allowing Tom C to come on and play at left midfield and DB to up the tempo in the middle of the park.

PHD continued to enjoy some possession but they lacked any real penetration and the back four for the Ravens were able to shut down any attack before it gained momentum. Skipper Stu Mac was enormous at the back as was Dave Hunt and the Creationists, dare I say it, seemed to run out of creativity.

Chris Gio made sure Aman wasnt falling asleep though as an attempted clearance of a cross skewed off his right boot and was headed for the top left corner, but for the ever alert Aman, who tipped the ball over for a corner.

Down the other end a free kick was conceded by PHD, and Chris Gio curled a beautiful free kick into the 18 yard box from the left. Rick Gio rose above the defence and his glancing downward header beat the keeper from 10 yards. A classic goal, and one that got the huge crowd fired up. The official attendance figure was given as 257, although this may not have accounted for the kids watching from the trees in their backyards.

There was to be no hand of God for Pacific Hills Dural in the final 20 minutes as the Ravens made a further substitute, bringing Adam Shepherd on for the tiring Dan Illingsworth. The Ravens held on comfortably for a well deserved 1-0 win and they were cheered off enthusiastically by the Peel Park faithful. The team song was sung with much fervour in the dressing room and the beers tasted better than usual up at the Bayview.

Bring on Nth Epping!!

Ravens Hold Penno!!

Pennant Hills 1
Gladesville Ravens 1
(18/04/2009)

After securing a 1-0 win in the season opener against PHD, the scheduled 2nd round match against Nth Epping was washed out, meaning the Ravens had to wait 2 weeks before travelling out to face the pride of Pennant Hills.

This was going to be the acid test for the Ravens, to find out just how well they had recruited in the off season, because if ever they were going to be tested, it was away to Pennant Hills.

The Ravens were almost at full strength - Aman in goals, Chris Gio sweeping and a back three of David Hunt, Stuart McAlister and Anthony Oppedisano. At right midfield was Dan Illingsworth, at left midfield Adrian Macerola and in the centre of the park Damien Luksic was partnered by David Brennan. Up front Rick Gio joined Julian Miller. A strong bench of Panucci, Zorbie, Floppy, Sheepy and Cheyne Miller.

From the kick off the Ravens looked the goods with some free flowing play that resulted in several chances. Dan Illingsworth was thwarted by a great save from the Penno keeper after a sublime Chris Gio through ball had presented him with the one on one opportunity. Dave Brennan was then unlucky not to score before Dan again went agonisingly close.

Down the other end a curling strike from Kurt bounced fortuitously off the post and into Aman's hands, but apart from that the Ravens looked solid at the back. David Hunt was immense, and Opp and Artie were combining well on the left. Stu Mac and Gio were as rock solid as ever, but it was in the middle of the park where plaudits must be given. Damien Luksic was a pillar of strength, winning balls, taking on the defence and getting from box to box on a constant basis. Steven Gerrard-esque!!

DB was also having a strong game as he ran his opposite number ragged. Speaking of numbers, the poor Penno player marking Dan Illingsworth certainly got to learn Dan's shirt number pretty quickly as time and time again he was looking at the back of it as Dan beat him for pace and skill down the line.

Just on the stroke of half time however, disaster struck, as Chris Gio went into a 50/50 challenge with Matty Seale. Unprotected as he was, Gio's arm took the brunt of the collision, and he stayed down as the half time whistle sounded. A broken arm was the diagnosis, and Gio was to take no further part in the game - a terrible shame considering the influence he was having on the game.

His troops rallied though, and the half time talk was strong and positive - there was 45 minutes to go, and out playing the premiership favourites in the first half counted for absolutely nothing. Panucci came off the bench to replace Gio at sweeper, and the Ravens took to the park confident of getting at least a point at Pennant Hills - the first time since a controversial Robbie Volpato wonder goal had given the Ravens a 2-1 win.

The Ravens were straight onto the attack and some wonderful inter-play down the left allowed Artie to stream into the Penno 18 yard box. With the defender beaten, and the keeper advancing, Artie drilled a left footed shot that skimmed off the cross bar and out for a goal kick. The Ravens faithful returned to their seats, hands still in the air as they reflected on what might have been.

By this stage the game had really opened up and it was becoming an end to end affair, an affair which Penno had now got themselves right back into. And it was Penno who opened the scoring after a long ball from the right found Chris Allen, who controlled well, before turning Dave Hunt inside out. Panucci attempted to close down the shot, but it was well hit and beat Aman on the far post.

The Ravens of previous seasons would have dropped their heads, packed up their bags and headed for the exit signs, but this outfit is made of sterner stuff and they didn't want to come away from this game empty handed!!

And less than 2 minutes after the resumption of play the Ravens were level - Dan once again skipped his way merrily past his defender but was tugged back just outside the edge of the box, allowing Artie the chance to whip in one of his dangerous left footed free kicks. The Penno defence couldn't deal with the ball as it curled towards to goal and Dave Brennan loomed large looking to head the ball home. A Penno defender got there first, but he could do little by nod the ball into the back of his own net.

The celebrations were joyous as the Ravens returned to their positions, ready for the re-start. Zorbie came on for DB and Sheepy replaced the outstanding Dave Hunt

After Floppy came on to replace Rick Gio, the last 10 minutes seemed to take an eternity, but Panucci, Stu Mac, Sheepy  and Opp made sure there was to be no late winner for the green and golds. Even an Aman flick pass to himself couldn't bring the Ravens undone, and when the full time whistle sounded, a well earned point was theirs.

Come on the mighty Ravens!!

10 Man Ravens Hold On For A Gritty Draw!!

Pennant Hills 1
Gladesville Ravens 1
(18/04/2009)

It was good to be finally back after the rain & chocolate festivities. Although a tough hunting ground, Pennant Hills Park, where in the past we have been the hunted, this ressies side was determined to put the first week debacle behind them. The line up was, Purc in his favoured & only position, goals. A new look back line with Christou sweeping, Cruyff, George & 1/2 time as stoppers. Midfielders from left to right were - 2 bootsTC, Mois, Zorb & captain Z Man. Up front where he kind of belongs was the Fat Cat teaming up with Roids who were both looking to open their accounts. On the bench were too many to name & Robocop, break glass in emergency, Volpato.

The game began with the Ravens on the ascendancy, passing & moving as if at training. Penno thought they were up against the black & white striped Juve. Zorby who was advised he was only on for the first half was this time pulling the right strings, controlling the middle & the tempo. It was he who had the first of the half chances when some good lead up on the right from Z Man & Cruyff found Roids in the box who held it up for a rampaging zorb who had his shot blocked.

The next time they breached the right, it proved to be gold with zorby breaking into the box beating the first with speed & the second with a jink & dummy to get to the byline & cut back to a well positioned Roids who unleashed with a first time shot that rocketed high past the keeper on the near post. Where was that last year was the question on the sideline. 1 - 0 and looking good. But it wouldn't be the Ravens without controversy.

Now playing with new found confidence, Christou attempted a wall pass coming out of the box. This was intercepted by Penno's 25 who had his one on one shot saved by the ever agile Purc, but then what happened next was out of WWF. Purc had parried the ball back to 25 who shinned it past Purc & goal bound. As he tried to go around the stranded keeper, they embraced & crashed to earth with a thud.

The two game PL ref, concluded that Purc had been too affectionate & proceeded to reach into the back pocket & produce a red. Being the clubman he is, Purc wanted to give the other keepers a go & should add to his one week with a few nice words to the ref as he departed the field.

Enter captain Z, a keeper in the Gary Meyer mould, his first task was to expertly dive low to the left & save the penalty taken by 8. As half time approached the Ravens had another chance which saw Roids break down the right to cut back to Cat who steadied & just as he pulled the trigger, was cut down by a pair of sliding tackles. The ref not in a charitable mood allowed play to go. Half time 1-0

The 10 men Ravens made 1 change at half time. Zorby off to rest for 1sts, replaced by The Hun going to right mid with Roids to partner the relentless Mois in the middle. Instructions at half time were to do a Robbie at training, stay in your half & guard the goal.

Although not getting too many touches the Ravens did get in the Penno half a few times with TC down the left full of running. The Cat came off after 10 to get ready for next weeks ANZAC test at Peel - plus he had a vested interesting in race 4 at Randwick and headed straight for the car radio instead of the showers.

On came Gavin who had impressed in his first trial. He went to right mid with the Hun going to solo striker. His tactic to stay offside because the linesboy was only 10 & didn't understand, backfired as he was carded after the 30th offside for kicking the ball away. Welcome to GHFA.

1/2 time Hutcho graduated to 3/4 time Hutcho after a solid performance & was replaced with the Spaniard. Penno now with possession in the 80%'s had no real answer to the new defensive line up. And then with 3 to go, the unthinkable, the Spaniard, jumping as though on a mini tramp won a clean header above the Penno 28 who had ventured forward from the back only to nudge nudge wink wink the ref into giving a penalty. The Z man initially picked the right way but was still beaten for a gut wrenching equaliser. A couple more yellows ensued & the final whistle went shortly after. Full time 1-1. Although the song will have to wait until next week, much can be taken away from a passionate spirited effort.

well deserved draw against Pennant Hills the previous week had instilled a sense of belief in the Ravens camp. If they could match it with the best, then they knew they had what it took to be a competitive force in this competition. The key was to maintain the same intensity every week.

Thornleigh were coming off a 2-1 victory against Epping Eastwood, so the Ravens were expecting a tough game at the Stade De Peel and Coach Gio was forced to make a few changes after DB and Opp succumbed to niggling injuries during the week. Joel came in at left back whilst Roidsy came in up front to partner Julz, allowing Rick Gio to drop back into the centre of the park.

Thornleigh kicked off, but for the next 20 minutes that was to be about their only touch as the Ravens dominated possession and territory. Rick Gio and Damo were winning everything in the middle of the park, and this was allowing Dan and Adrian plenty of opportunities to attack the flanks, as time after time they were fed the ball in the opposition half.

Adrian in particular was able to get in behind his defender and on one occasion nearly chipped the keeper from 35 yards. D-Train had an effort from distance that whistled just wide and Roidsy was sent in on goal but just couldn't quite find the finish.

At the back the Ravens were winning everything, with Panucci out-jumping his taller opposite number every time and Gio, Dave Hunt and captain Stu Mac shutting down any Thunder foray through the middle of the park. A cross from the left late in the 1st half posed the only real threat, but Panucci was able to head it comfortably wide of the Ravens' goal before the Thunder striker could get a touch on it.

Into the second half and the Thunder started to pick up a bit of momentum, and for the first 10-15 minutes it appeared is they were on top and might go on and win the game, but the Ravens held firm and saw off the few half chances Thornleigh were able to create, before getting themselves back into the game and creating chances of their own.

Dan Illingsworth started to find his feet again and he was a constant threat down the right flank, whilst Adrian began to cause similar problems down the left. After a quiet 15 minute period, Damo and Rick again began to assert the authority on the midfield, and there very few 50/50 balls that were not won by this pair.

With 25 minutes to go, the ball fell to Rick Gio just outside the box, he dummied to shoot and then slid the ball past the bamboozled defender who could only turn and watch as Gio pulled the trigger for real - BANG! 1-0 to the Ravens as the ball flew into the bottom right corner from 15 yards. Rick celebrated in style, enough so to upset goal keeper Tulloch and also referee Tom Forrest who had a quiet chat to Rick Gio on the way back to the re-start.

From there on there was only going to be the one winner, and the Ravens could have gone further ahead had they taken some half chances. Adrian appeared to upended in the box but the foul was adjudged to have taken place just outside the box - Panucci as well was brought down to the left of the 18 yard box but again the free kick came to nothing.

Down the other end Aman saved smartly at point blank range, somehow managing to block the ball and then fall on it to smother any further chance the Thunder may have had.

The clocked ticked down and after some issues with a substitution (Zorbie nearly being yellow carded before he took the field - through no fault of his own might I add) the full time whistle was blown and the Ravens had recorded another clean sheet and another victory which would send them to 7 points and equal first with Pennant Hills.

A tough road trip to Epping Eastwood awaits the mighty Ravens this coming weekend, but if they continue to defend and attack as they have been, then another positive result is not beyond their reach.

Come on the mighty Ravens!!

Ravens Pick Up A Point On The Road!

Epping Eastwood 1
Gladesville Ravens 1
(02/05/2009)

The trip to Boronia Park may not be one of the longer road trips, but it is certainly one of the tougher ones especially when the Tigers are brimming with confidence. Add to that a pitch that resembles a goat track and it makes things a lot tougher for teams like the Ravens who like to knock the ball about.

Coach Gio was ruled out during the week with an ankle injury, and may even be in doubt for the home game againt Normanhurst this weekend. So Oppy came in at sweeper and Joel stayed at left back, whilst Zorbie got his first start of the season as the supporting striker to Julz, a role he would play with some aplomb.

From the kick off the game was never going to be anything but a scrappy affair, despite the Ravens efforts to introduce some skill and attractive play, but Dan and Artie were unableto get on top of the bumpy pitch and time and time again moves broke down with a bobble and a miss kick.

The Epping Eastwood Strikers were doing their best impressions of wankers, with number 30 making cat noises when any Ravens player went down and also sledging any player that made a mistake. Funnily enough he himself went down injured on several occasions and he also failed to do anything decent all game, other than getting himself sent off for another dive in the second half. Number 23 went to great lengths to point out to the Ravens defence that he was much better than them and had played at levels much higher than anyone else on the pitch - yet he didn't hit one shot on target. He also bitched and moaned about every decision that went against him and carried on like a prize idiot for the entire game.

Anyway back to the game, and it was a Ravens corner that lead to the first goal. It was by no means orthodox, in fact there wasn't a Ravens player within 5 metres of the ball but somehow the Tigers defender headed the ball back across the goals and into the side netting. 1-0 to the Ravens!

Not long after the Tigers were level though. The Ravens had done well to repel an Epping Eastwood attack, with Joel throwing himself across the goal line to block a shot that then bounced to safety, but from the resulting throw in Damien Luksic was adjudged to have tripped Gareth Wright in the box, despite him appearing to trip over his own feet as he went to control the ball.

The penalty was converted and the sides went to the break locked at 1-1.

The second half was worse than the first in terms of  quality believe it or not, and despite one or two crosses that flashed across the Epping box and a few shots from distance, neither keeper was troubled.

Floppy came on for Zorbie, who had played very well as the supporting striker, creating several half chances and making a nuisance of himself amongst the Tigers' midfield. Sheepy also came on for Dave Hunt, who had another solid game, and DB had come on for Dan.

Number 30 then got himself sent off and number 23 was cautioned for his constant bitching and it was not long after this that the game ended - the final whistle being about the best thing in the entire game.

So the spoils were shared and despite the Ravens being disappointed that they did not collect the 3 points, they may look back on this game in a couple of months time as a good point gained as opposed to 2 points dropped. Only time will tell.

Steve McQueen Inspires Epping Eastwood!

The Ravens lead this game at the 81st minute mark by 3 goals to nil, after Roidsy had bagged a brace and Johan had chipped in with a goal as well. But on the Epping Eastwood bench sat none other than Steve McQueen, and when he entered the fray with less than 10 minutes to go, the rest as they say, is history.

A Frustrating Day At The Office!!

Gladesville Ravens 1
Normanhurst 1
(09/05/2009)

After picking up a point on the road the previous week, the Ravens were looking forward to returning home in a bid to get 3 points in the bag and put some space between themselves and the mid-table teams. Despite their slow start to the season, Normanhurst were never going to be easy beats, but the Ravens were confident of a victory even without their injured coach.

The side that drew with Epping Eastwood was tinkered with only slightly, with Zorbie dropping back to the bench, allowing for D-Train to push up front and DB to come in to the centre of the park. Harry High Pants, aka Novac Djokovic was the referee, and both sides feared he may ruin what looked like being a good game with his pedantic refereeing.

The game kicked off and for the first 25 minutes the Ravens dominated completely. Artie smashed a shot from wide in the 18 yard box that bounced off the back stick, Dan did the same from the right with a fierce volley that somehow was saved by the keeper. D-Train then broke down the left and his right footed flick across the goals also bounced off the post. He then saw a left footed volley from 10 yards clear the bar.

The Ravens were cooking, but it wasnt until 15 minutes in that Artie got the break through, after his left footed drive from just inside the box somehow managed to squirm under the keeper and into the back of the net.

A very deserved lead, and one which should have been doubled 10 minutes later when Julz headed home from wide on the 6 yard box. Somehow the linesman adjudged Julz to be offside, despite the fact that he had to dive forward and through 2 defenders.

Slowly Normo got back into the game, but aside from a few corners they looked unlikely to trouble the Ravens defence. Half time arrived with the score line reading 1-0. The Ravens knew they should have been ahead by more, but also knew they were leading for the first time this year at the break.

The first 10 minutes of the second half was even enough, but the Ravens slowly started to dominate the play again, with Artie continuing to terrorise the Normanhurst defence down the left, ably supported by his deputy Oppy.

However a throw in from the left into the edge of the box, saw the ball fall to Turner outside the box, and he drilled a shot into the bottom left corner beyond the unsighted Aman.

The Ravens picked themselves back up quickly and went straight back onto the attack. Artie again grazing the woodwork with a fierce shot and DB volleying over from 8 yards with his left foot. Julz then had a header which he could not direct past the Normo keeper, who was easily their best player.

With 25 minutes to go, Normo were reduced to 10 men, after a harsh second yellow card was awarded. The Ravens tried to take advantage of the situation by spreading the ball wide in a bid to stretch the Normo defence, but they continued to hold and the Ravens continued to waste chances.

Valid claims for a penalty were again waved away by the referee, the second occasion on which Normo had handled the ball inside their box. Damo, Dan Illingsworth and DB were all given a rest, allowing Zorbie, Floppy and Sheepy to enter the fray.

As the clock ticked down, several further crosses flashed across the Normanhurst penalty area but the ball refused to cross the line and the Ravens had to settle for a disappointing draw. They had created plenty of chances and played some very good football Artie clearly the standout but they continue to be short on luck in front of goal. The goals will no doubt come eventually, lets hope it is this Saturday against West Penno.

Ravens Fade In The 2nd Half!!

Gladesville Ravens 2
PHD 4
(09/05/2009)

A beautiful day welcomed us back to Peel for the Annual Ladies Day which attracted a plethora of Sheilas from afar to watch scintillating football.

Super coach Fatcat chose the same starting lineup that got to a 3 nil lead the week before. Shane in goals, defenders, RobocopRobbie, can I have my studs back Phil, sshhhhAG & Tommy Two boots. Midfielders, SimonSpaniard, JohanCruyff, its footballChristou & captain Z. Strikers, Fatcat & Roidsy, who was looking to break goal scoring records of 4 in a season from a Ravens PL player, not seen since the days of the Kous.

The game started like so many before, poor preparation & a soft goal after a few minutes. 0 -1. Not long after though, Roidsy was fouled outside the right edge box. Its football struck a wonderful crossing free kick to find Roidsy who beat a feeble offside trap to use his thigh to guide the ball in from a few feet. 1-1 & the equal goal scoring record.

Not long after, a mishit Normo through ball floated dangerously close to the autumn sun, blinding keeper Shano, who only manage to get a hand on it before it bounced toward goal. Robocop Robbie could only clear onto the post, where the Normo striker waited to head the rebound into the back of the net. 1-2.

The past Ressie Ravens would have packed it in by now, but to their credit they got another one back, almost a carbon copy of the first. Foul on Roids, taken by its football, header by Fat Cat on the far post & he opens his account for the season. 2-2

Not much more to say on a tight rest of half. 2-2 halftime The 2nd half saw Roidsy stay in the sheds with a Zorbstrings. His replacement being last years most improved, Brad (George) McIndoe. The Spaniard was also replaced by Moises after heat exhaustion.

The first 15 minutes could have been mistaken for Gallipoli. Shots on the Ravens goal came from all angles. Shano, who had a quick eye surgery at the break, managed to repel the barrage, to keep the boys in the game.

Fat cat had a good chance when he beat two defenders with his trademark shimmy to only drag it past the left post with a trademark shot. After yet another barrage, it took a long throw, a couple of flicks by the defenders to give the unmarked Normo winger a free volley on the far post to beat the now buggered keeper. 2- 3

The game swung in the balance with the boys trying ever so hard to find the elusive equalizer. So hard in fact, two boots had to come off for fear he was going to overheat. The Normo youth finally got the better of the aging defence, when their young replacement got one on one with Shano & shot straight to the body, forcing the ball & keeper into the goal. 2 -4. Game over.

Next game sees us at Peel again, against front runners West Pennant Hills.

Ravens Roll On!!

Gladesville Ravens 1
West Pennant Hills 0
(16/05/2009)

After a frustrating draw against Normanhurst, the Ravens were looking to take maximum points from their clash against West Pennant Hills at Peel Park, but they would have to attempt this without their star left winger Adrian Macerola and coach Chris Gio.

Chris was still sidelined with ankle ligament damage and Adrian had strained the ligaments in his knee whilst playing against Normo, so into the starting line up came Sheepy to take up his position on the left of midfield. The rest of the starting line up remained the same.

So the Ravens kicked off, hoping to dominate their opponents as they had done the week before, but an unusual flatness was evident and the black and whites struggled to get out of 1st gear. Try as they might, they could not re-produce the fluency of the week before and this allowed the West Pennant Hills side to get into the game and make it a contest.

It proved to be a half of few chances, although the Ravens were unlucky not to go ahead after Julz's shot was somehow parried to safety by the West Penno keeper. Down the other end Aman had to be at his sharpest to turn a long range effort around the post to prevent the home side going behind, but as the half time whistle went, both sides were locked at 0-0.

Although unhappy with their 1st half performance, the Ravens knew they had been in this situation several times this season already, but had gone on to win the game.

Just after the break Sheepy was replaced with Zorbie, with Dan moving to the left flank to allow Zorb to play on the right. A better period of play ensued for the Ravens, as the ever energetic DB and Rick Gio started to take control of the centre of the park, which created space for the wide runners.

With just under 30 minutes to go, Rick Gio decided to take things into his own hands, and it was a beautiful piece of individual brilliance which gave the Ravens the lead. Rick jinked past two defenders on the right before cutting back in towards the 6 yard box with the ball now on his left foot. He made no mistake with the finish, smashing it past the helpless Juice in the West Penno goals. A tremendous goal and one that the Ravens were now prepared to defend.

From there on in, the Ravens were prepared to sit deep and absorb any pressure West Penno tried to apply. A wave of corners and free kicks were weathered comfortably by the Ravens defence, and they continued to counter attack quickly down the right and left flank in a bid to steal a second goal.

Floppy had come on for D-Train at this stage, who had run himself ragged and Dan was replaced by Tom Cunningham. Flopy's main contribution to the game was a crunching tackle on his own team mate Zorbie - that and his attempt to take the field of play without his jersey on......quality stuff!!

The game came to an end just before West Penno could take another corner after Tom C had slid in well to prevent a cross being whipped into the box. The Ravens had won their 3rd game and remained undefeated and in second spot on the table. A great start to the season so far, but their mettle will be tested when they travel to Eastwood this weekend to face the mighty St Andrews.

Ravens Escape With A Draw!!

Gladesville Ravens 2
Kenthurst 2
(30/05/2009)

Despite the disappointing performance against West Penno the previous week the Ravens had still managed to pick up all 3 points, but they knew they'd have to be far better this week if they were to be any chance against Kenthurst

Chris Gio made his return from injury and started at left midfield, whilst Zorbie came in on the right of midfield replacing Dan Illingsworth. Floppy got a start up front with Julz's shoulder still causing him some grief. New signing Matty Roberts took his place on the bench after playing 60 minutes in ressies.

Tom Forest got proceedings underway and the Bushboys were the quicker of the two teams to get into their stride and they soon had the Ravens under pressure as they mounted a series of raids on the black and white's goal.

Aman had to be at his best to palm away a vicious drive from the left winger and the pint sized Panucci somehow managed to head the ball off the line after it had been sent goalwards off a corner.

Try as they might the Ravens just couldn't get into their stride thanks largely to the pressure Kenthurst were applying right across the park. Both flankers were proving a handful for the Ravens defence and it was their left winger who should have been yellow carded for a blatant dive in the box but Tom waved play on.

Zorbie was getting a rollocking from the Kenthurst faithful, for no good reason mind you, and Rick Gio was his usual popular self with the travelling fans, but despite the barrage of verbal abuse the Ravens were able to keep the Bushboys scoreless as they went into half time.

The mood in the Ravens camp was positive enough. They knew they had been outplayed but were still on level terms as they had been on numerous times this year already, before going on to win the game.

It was not long into the second half before Gio started to ring the changes, taking himself and Zorbie from the field, much to the delight of the Kenthurst fans. D-Train moved back to left midfield so that Julz could move up front and Dan Illingsworth was a straight swap for Zorbie on the right.

5 minutes later the Ravens were behind, after the Kenthurst striker was allowed to turn and play his partner into the 18 yard box, where his first time shot shot from the right flew past Aman and into the bottom left corner. A great finish, and not much Aman could have done to prevent the Ravens going a goal behind.

There is no doubt the goal hurt the Ravens, who had struggled to find any attacking cohesion all game and now knew they were definitely going to have pull a rabbit out of the hat if they were to salvage something from this game.

The game continued in the same fashion, with the Ravens unable to keep possession for any length of time and the Bushboys creating half chances from the pressure they were applying on the Ravens defence. One such chance was again cleared off the line by Panucci after he was able to block a fierce drive from just inside the box off a corner. It rebounded to safety and the Ravens continued to cling on to the faint hope that they had a goal in them.

With 15 to go, there still wasn't much happening for the Ravens, but after what can only be described as a defensive f#ck up, the Ravens were given half a chance and Julz was on hand to chip the ball over the keeper and into the bottom right corner.

A lucky goal you might say, but the second had nothing to do with luck about 3 minutes later when DB belted one in from 30 yards, the keeper again caught off his line - a cracking goal and one the Ravens could not believe, and nor could the travelling fans who went silent for the first time all game. The Ravens faithful had found their voice though as they looked to cheer their team home.

But with less than 2 minutes remaining their was to be another twist, as the Kenthurst right winger was allowed to get his cross in from the corner flag when it appeared he had nowhere to go. The left midfielder scooted through at the back post unmarked to head home the cross from close range and give the Bushboys a deserved draw.

A great game of football to watch no doubt, but the late goal left the Ravens a little disappointed, despite being outplayed for the majority of the game. A tough road trip to Dural now lies ahead of the Ravens on Saturday followed by a game on Monday against the ever improving North Epping Rangers. So not an easy weekend ahead, and one that could prove crucial if the Ravens are to stay in the mix for a top 4 finish.

10 Man Ravens Unlucky Not To Win!!

Pacific Hills Dural 1
Gladesville Ravens 1
(06/06/2009)

The Ravens, who are hoping to add Google Maps as a major sponsor next season, thanks to the fantastic directions given for the long road trip north west, went into this game still undefeated, but they were coming up against a PHD side who were equal on points with them and had been unlucky not to get a point when they faced the Ravens in the 1st round.

The pitch was very heavy underfoot, and the rugby league style goal posts along with the field markings seemed to indicate that football wasn't the only sport being played there this Saturday. The Ravens ressies boys handled the conditions okay though and ran out 4-0 winners, with George's brother, Aaron Vatalis scoring all 4 goals.

There were some slight positional changes to allow for the return of Artie on the left flank and the suspension of Rick Gio, with Chris Gio moving back to sweeper, Joel being pushed to right back and Dave Hunt being pushed onto the bench. Julz returned up front as the lone striker as the Ravens looked to win the midfield battle with Matty, DB and DTrain flooding the centre of the park.

PHD got off to the better start, and a cross was fumbled by Aman, who appeared to lose sight of the ball in the sun, and the dropped ball was pounced on by the PHD striker and tapped in from less than a yard out. Not a great start for the balck and whites, but the heads didn't drop as they knew they had another 80 minutes to pull a goal back.

The Ravens picked up the tempo, and began to get on top of the school boys, and after some good attacking play on the right, a keeper blunder down the other end gifted the Ravens the equaliser. Someone called "Keeper's" (probably Robbie Volpato) when a through ball had been lobbed into the 18 yard box, but the keeper didn't move, and neither did the two defenders. A Surprised Dan Illingsworth found the ball at his feet and time to turn, which saw him position about 8 yards out from goal and just the keeper to beat. He curled the ball left footed into the bottom left corner and the Ravens were back in business.

Disaster then struck for the Ravens when Chris Gio was brought down on the edge of the 18 yard box after he had attempted to skip inside the defender. The referee somehow decided there was no foul and that it was play on. A bewildered Chris Gio asked the question, with one too many expletives included, ie one expletive, and he was shown a straight red card when a simple explanation from the referee and maybe a yellow card would have sufficed.

With the Ravens now down to 10 men with 70 minutes to go, a re-shuffle at the back was required, and Joel tucked in at sweeper and Oppy and Stu Mac became the two stoppers in a 3-5-1 formation.

From here on in it was surprisingly all the Ravens as they battled well, and created chances - Matty Roberts going the closest with a beautiful free kick which hit the outside of the upright and unluckily out for a goal kick. A DB header off a Matty Roberts free kick also nearly gave the Ravens the lead, but it sailed over the cross bar

Half time came and the Ravens felt comfortable. PHD had done nothing to try and press home their numerical advantage, and the Ravens talked about upping the tempo for the first 10 minute in a bid to catch them cold after the break.

The second half was pretty much all one way traffic as the Ravens dominated possession, and for the periods they didn't have the ball they scrambled so well that PHD didn't really have a chance, apart from one good strike from distance that was well saved by Aman.

At the other end the Ravens were on fire and could easily have had 3 goals. DTrain was the first to go close after he waltzed through the PHD defence only to see his right footed shot from the edge of the 18 yard box bounce off the outside of the post. Dan Illingsworth then hit a screamer of a volley that had it been a foot either side it would have been a goal, but such was the Ravens luck it rocketed straight into the keeper who didn't know too much about it.

DB then crashed a volley that was deflected wide for a corner and Adz, who had come on up front in place of Julz, tried a deft flick from 6 yards that didn't quite cut the mustard.

Oppy, Stu Mac and Panucci held firm at the back, and were very well supported by the midfield, who worked tirelessly for the entire game reducing the amount of pressure on the Ravens back 3. Dan by this stage had been replaced by Dave Hunt, after he had run himself to a standstill on the right flank. Artie on the left had also been full of running and his trickery had time and time again unlocked the PHD right hand defence.

In the end the Ravens had to settle for the draw, something had they been ofered with 10 men at the 20th minute mark they probably would have taken 8 days a week. But such was their performance they went away feeling a little disappointed knowing they had had the better of the second half and created the chances to win the game.

A tough game on Monday now against the ever improving Nth Epping who will be as fresh as daisies having not played on Saturday due to a soggy Boronia Park. A quick pool session at Purcy's was organised after the PHD game to try and reduce any muscle soreness for Monday's game. Only 5 people were brave enough to step into the icy water though, and 2 of those were pushed in!! Only time will tell if the freezing water will help the Ravens pick up a much needed 3 points at home!

Ravens Run Riot!!

PHD 0
Gladesville Ravens 4
(06/06/2009)

The ever so long trip to Fiddletown, against the leagues newest team &undefeated heavenly heavyweights, PHD was met with much fear & trepidation. So much so the coach, fielded a new look side scary enough to send Satan packing.

In goals & trying to extend his 21 minute goalless performance was Purc. the revolving door which is sweeper, has found Zorby looking to get in some minutes after spending some on the bench for the Byron Bay bound firsts. (Ressies will be advised of destination at next gym session) Stopping was the ever reliable Phil & time Hutcho. in the midfield were the old warhorses Brad, Robbie & Johan. Left was Richies brother Tom & Right was the Hun making a rare starting appearance after an injury riddled start. Up front where he belongs was Roids, partnered by the only player in the league that is bigger than himself, the one that needs no introduction, the ever so popular, wheel spinning, fire eating, ex goal keeping broken toed smoking , magnificent, havent played a game all season spent a night in hospital - Adonis Vatalis. (V bomber)

The game began with a whistle, the ravens soon took control through the middle creating a couple early chances for the strikers who due to altitude and acclimatisation could only produce back passes.

After 10 minutes, a speculative through ball was chased doggedly by V bomber, the frightened keeper made a feeble attempt gather, but the determination was too great & the V bomber notched his first goal with a tap in.

The second goal came via some slick passing with Brad playing a one two with Roids to then unselfishly passing to the unmarked V bomber who drilled it top left with his favoured left boot.

Just before half time, a second effort cross from the Hun landed at the feet of the heavily marked V bomber on the penalty spot, with a jink & a step he maneuvered the ball to his trusty left & unleashed a shot to inside the right post which had the keeper rooted to the spot. HAT TRICK the first by a Raven since Koussas in the 99 Final.

Half time & the league leaders were devastated, but they would be sure to come out firing in the second half. All that was left now was to put the ghost of Epping Eastwood to bed..could they do it

The 2nd began as expected, the young boys came out firing & dominated most of the half but created very little under the constant scrutiny of the back three. Hutcho made it past half time to the 70th minute & was replaced by Simon.

Roids suffered yet another strain in the act of missing & was replaced by Fat Cat. Lucas then replaced the Hun. To put an end to good afternoons work, the V bomber was put through on goal by a deft ball by Brad, he drew the keeper and slotted in for his fourth. 4-0 & a day that will go down in the annuls. They will say where were you the day. I was in Fiddletown, NSW.bring on NER the cellar dwellars.

Ravens Unbeaten Run Comes To An End!!

Gladesville Ravens 1
Nth Epping 2
(08/06/2009)

The 8 game undefeated streak finally came to an end on a cold Monday afternoon at Peel Park. The Ravens had battled admirably to a 1-1 draw with 10 men against Pacific Hills on the Saturday on a wet and heavy pitch, and although this cannot be blamed, it certainly played some part in the lacklustre Ravens performance

From the kick off the Ravens could not get out of 1st gear and their more enthusiastic opponents were drawing confidence from this. The Ravens weren't without their chances and had the better goal scoring opportunities but as has been the way this year the ball refused to cross the line.

The drab skyline was matched only by the drab first half spectacle as both sides plodded off at 0-0.

With about 10 minutes of the second half gone, DTrain tried to run with the ball at his feet just outside his own 18 yard box, only to be dispossessed. A shot was unleashed and it flew into the top corner. The Rangers were just as surprised as they were ecstatic and 20 minutes later they increased their leade with an equally well taken goal. Sheepy had been beaten by his man on the left flank and his cross was controlled well and then belted into the top corner with Aman left stranded.

The Ravens tried and tried to get back into the game but they could not break out of the state of torpidity they had started the game in. With 8 minutes to go Rick Gio missed a sitter from 5 yards with an open goal at his mercy. Even had he scored it is hard to say the Ravens would have had the play in them to draw the game, but with 3 minutes to go Julz did get the Ravens on the scoresheet after the ball fell to him on the edge of the 6 yard box and he flicked it into the bottom right corner.

That was it though and the Ravens had no-one but themselves to blame. Credit must be given to Nth Epping who played an up tempo game and scored two very good goals. The Ravens had to pick themselves up quickly though, as the short turn around saw them facing the might Pennant Hills on the following Saturday.

Close But No Cigar!!

Gladesville Ravens 2
Pennant Hills 3
(13/06/2009)

The 1st round clash between these two sides turned out to be a cracking encounter, despite only the 2 goals being scored on the day, so the expectations were high as arguably the two best footballing sides took to the field for round 2.

The first half was very similar to the 1st half in the first game, with the Ravens dominating and creating the better chances. Dan Illingsworth was again carving up on the right of midfield and Artie was doing the same on the left. Matty Roberts was the one pulling the strings though, as his passing game caught Penno napping time and time again.

It was from one of these passes that Dan was able to cut into the box from wide on the right only to be brought down by the Penno sweeper. To be fair it was a soft penalty and I have seen a lot worse not be given, but the Ravens weren't going to complain and Julz slotted the penalty to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead going into the break.

The 2nd half started well for the Ravens as well, but almost in the blink of an eye they found themselves down 3-1. Such is the quality of the Penno side, that you cannot afford to give them even a sniff. Unfortunately for the Ravens they gave them 3 sniffs, and each sniff resulted in a well taken goal.

The Ravens could have given up at this point, but they did not, and they fought hard to slow Penno's momentum and turn the game back in their favour. The Ravens started to dominate possession again and pushed for the equalising goals. They were very susceptible to the counter attack though, and with Kurt, Chris Allen, Boz and Matt Seale in their ranks this was always going to be a big threat.

But the Ravens defence held firm, and they finally pulled a goal back when Joel picked out Matty Roberts with a through ball that allowed him one touch before he had to pull the trigger. He made no mistake and rifled it past the Penno Keeper.

The problem for the Ravens was that this goal came with only 5 minutes to go. With time running out they almost jagged an equaliser when Floppy contested a 50/50 ball with the keeper on the penalty spot. The ball fell kindly for Penno though, and the game was gone.

Another great game between these two sides, and a much better performance from the Ravens after their disappointing loss to Nth Epping.

Muddy Waters!!

Thornleigh 2
Gladesville Ravens 2
(20/06/2009)

After 2 consecutive losses the Ravens were desperate to stop the rot, but to do so they faced an uphill battle against the Thornleigh Thunder who were sitting pretty in second spot on the competition table. To make matters worse Oakleigh Oval resembled an oversized swimming pool, after a week of wet weather, but somehow the games were allowed to go ahead.

The Ravens were to be without their captain Stu Mac, who was stuck at home waiting for his baby to arrive, so DB was handed the skippers armband much to the dismay of Rick Gio. A 3-5-2 formation was favoured by coach Gio, which saw Oppy and DTrain start as the stoppers in front of Gio and Joel and Dan stationed as the wing backs. Matty, DB and Richo were given the job of manning the middle whilst Artie and Julz started up front.

The game kicked off with Thornleigh defending the most muddy part of the field, making it extremely dangerous and difficult to play out from the back, with the ball sometimes stopping dead in a puddle and at other times it would skid through at a rapid rate. This left Thunder no option but to play the long ball from the back, something which wouldnt have bothered them seeing as it was their favoured style of play.

They had an early chance to score, when a through ball found their striker in a one on one with Aman. His shot beat Aman, but Joel was there to stop the ball on the goal line, with the assistance of a puddle, and played the ball away to safety.

The Ravens looked to get the ball out of the mud in the middle of the park and played the drier flanks accordingly. Dan was having a whale of a game (if you mind the pun) on the right and was continuously getting in behind his defender. Joel was virtually playing as a centre back, so was not venturing too far forward, something that didnt bother him too much considering his propensity to get nose bleeds the further up the pitch he ventured.

He did get forward once though, and Matty played him a great ball from the right which he brought down nicely, turned away from his defender on the edge of the 18 yard box but then hit his shot straight into one of the puddles. It was definitely going in and would have had it been even an inch off the ground. Tissues were then brought onto the field to help stop the nose bleed and Joel returned to the more familiar surrounds of the halfway line.

Not long after that the Ravens were up 1-0 after a wonder striker from Julian Miller. Great work down the right from Dan lead to a ball being whipped into the box. Julz took a touch to control it with his back to the goal. The ball sat up at about shoulder height and Julz did what only a quality striker can do and snapped a scissor kick into the back of the net. The keeper didnt move and the defence stood gobsmacked, but Julian was up and away and the goal was matched by his celebratory swan dive into one of the puddles.

Moments later the Ravens were in again, after Joel had sent a long ball into the box, which goal keeper Tulloch miss judged and could only parry the ball away to the left of goal. Julz was first on the scene, and curled his right footed shoot from an acute angle on the edge of the 18 yard box into the vacant net with Tulloch stranded.

Things were going swimmingly for the Ravens (again please excuse the pun) until the referee decided to award Thornleigh a penalty, but for what we do not know. The Thornleigh player had skipped into the box, and may have taken a minor knock, but nothing that stopped his progression towards goal. The chance was missed but the referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot. The ball was conveniently placed on a dry piece of ground but it did not help Damo, who sent the ball well over the crossbar and into the nearby bushland.

2-0 at half time but the Ravens now had to defend in the mud and the 2 goal buffer suddenly didnt seem enough.

The second the second half started the Ravens were under the pump, as long ball after long ball was sent into the muddy 18 yard box. It wouldnt have made for the greatest of spectacles but it was very effective, and the Ravens found their 2 goal lead completely eroded after 15 minutes.

The first goal came after Thornleighs wide midfielder was able to escape Rick Gios marking and he found himself free to head the ball beyond Aman from 6 yards. The second goal came after Rick Gio was blatantly fouled, when he was tugged back by the shirt just outside our 18 yard box, only for the referee to wave play on as he was dispossessed illegally. The ball was quickly played wide and a ball was whipped in to the far post again where a great volley from 8 yards saw the scores locked up at 2-2.

The Ravens defence was under the kosh, but Gio, Oppy and DTrain continued to come up with last ditch challenges to prevent the Ravens goal being breached again. At this point anyone watching the game would have put money on Thornleigh over running the Ravens, but despite dominating for the next 15 minutes, the Ravens refused to concede again, and with 15 minutes to go they began to turn the tide, and it was they who looked the more likely to steal a winner.

Artie by this stage had gone off with a tight hammy and Tom C was stuck on up front with the Ravens light on for substitutes. Dan was still tearing away down the right and one of the balls he whipped in only just missed the outstretched boot of Tom C before Julz had a half chance which he just couldnt get a hold of.

A quick break by Thornleigh down the right was snuffed out by Joel, but as he slid into the clear the ball the right hammy went, and he was forced to limp off as Phil Mac entered the fray. Phils first touch was a beautiful kick and chase which pinned the Thunder down in their own half and his second might have been a screamer of a goal if Richo had have been able to play the ball to him wide on the left, but unfortunately he could only pick out a puddle.

With the seconds ticking down Matty Roberts danced into the 18 yard box. He got to the by line at which point a rough challenge saw the ball roll out for what clearly looked to be a corner, perhaps even a penalty considering the nature of the challenge which was much worse than what Thornleigh had been awarded one for in the 1st half. The referee decided it was neither a penalty or a goal kick and the game ended with the goal kick being taken.

The Ravens were disappointed after leading comfortably at half time, but considering the conditions and the side they were playing, a 2-2 draw was by no means a bad result. Next up they face Epping Eastwood in their second last game at Stade De Peel so make sure all you Ravens supporters get down there to cheer them on as they desperately need the 3 points this week!

Rubbish!!

Gladesville Ravens 2
Epping Eastwood 2
(27/06/2009)

Peel Park was looking pretty good considering it had been played on during one of the wettest Saturdays on record, certainly a damn sight better than Epping Eastwood's home ground at any rate, but it was starting to show signs of wear and tear - somewhat similar to the Ravens 1st grade side.

It was to be Chris Gio's last game before he took off to the States for a scouting mission, so the boys were extra anxious to send him away in good spirits. Stu Mac was back after his wife had given birth to a baby boy, aptly named Stuart the second Sonny-Bill McAlister, and was given the responsibility of marking Gareth Wright in the middle of the park, with Chris Gio and DB joining him in the centre. Dan started on the right, Tom C on the left and Julz partnered Rick Gio up front. Oppy and DTrain were the two stoppers in the 3-5-2 formation and Joel started at sweeper, despite doubts over his fitness.

From the off the Ravens looked the more comfortable side, no doubt the green stuff on the pitch must have felt a little strange to the Epping players, but neither Tom C, Rick Gio, Chris Gio, DB or Dan could put the Ravens ahead, despite them all having chances to do so.

Some spiteful challenges from the Tigers were left unpunished by the referee, even when one of the players decided to put the boot into Gio whilst he was down. Joel asked the question but was told to shut up and go away - a red card offence no doubt if something similar was said to the referee....

Joel's hamstring did not last, and at the 25 minute mark he was forced to limp from the field with Floppy coming on up front, Rick Gio moving back to centre midfield and Chris Gio going back to sweeper. Stu Mac was having a whale of a game in the centre, and Oppy and DB were in the thick of things as well.

Half time came though and the scores were locked at 0-0, so the Ravens had it all ahead of them in the second half.

With the Ravens running towards the canteen end, the second half started in promising fashion as the Ravens went straight on the attack. And it was from one of these raids that Tom C won a penalty, after he skinned his opposite number before being hacked down inside the box.

Julz allowed the keeper to pick his side, and then still sent the ball that way, but so well hit was the strike that the keeper couldn't even lay a hand on it.

1-0 to the Ravens, but barely 10 minutes later the scores were level after some scrappy defending allowed an unmarked player to head home from 6 yards.

Barely 2 minutes later though and the Ravens were ahead again with arguably the goal of the season. Dave Brennan chased down a through ball and surged into the box with the ball still bouncing around waist height. He shrugged off the defender and then let rip with a ferocious half volley from just inside the 18 yard box wide on the right.

The ball flew into the top left corner leaving the Epping Eastwood Keeper absolutely no chance. A wonder goal make no mistake!

But with just on 10 minutes to go the Ravens conceded another scrappy goal, almost a carbon copy in fact, and the black and whites were on their way to another frustrating draw.

Saint Luksic was then given his marching orders after he was on the wrong end of another refereeing blunder. He appealed to the referee's eyesight and mentioned the quality of game he had so far, but the referee wouldn't have any of Damo's constructive criticism.

There was still time for some handbags at 10 paces, after Chris Gio was grabbed and shoved by Gareth Wright, who had taken exception to Chris' tackle on another EEW player. This caused several others to rush in, including Rick Gio. Although only grabbing Gareth in a similar fashion to how he had grabbed Chris, the referee saw it fit only to send Rick off - mush to the pleasure of the EEW bench, who were mostly on the field at this point - yet somehow the referee decided to let this go...

So we move to next week's game against Normo - and I will not say "must win" because all we ever seem to do is draw!!!

Come on the Ravens!!

A Win At Last!!

Normanhurst 0
Gladesville Ravens 1
(04/07/2009)

The Ravens had thrown away leads in their last two games to draw against Thornleigh and then Epping Eastwood, results which may prove costly if the winged warriors do end up missing out on a top 4 spot. The clash against Normanhurst therefore carried extra importance, where only a win would be deemed an acceptable outcome against last year's premiers and champions.

The Ravens were missing several of their stars, either through injury, suspension or holidays and would have to be a gutsy effort if they were to bring home the 3 points.

Joel returned at sweeper, still unsure how the hammy would hold up, but he had an able back 3 in front of him of Oppy, Stu Mac and Tom C. Cheyne Miller was brought in for his 1st grade debut in between the sticks as the Ravens opted for some aerial presence. In the middle of the park George McIndoe came in to partner Matty Roberts and Dave Brennan, whilst Zorbie started on the right in place of the injured Dan Illingsworth and Artie took his customary position on the left. Up front Julz played the lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation custom built to nullify any attacking raids Normo might muster, whist allowing Nick and Artie to attack the flanks with cover.

The game kicked off with Normanhurst in the ascendancy - in fact they could have been 2-0 up within the first 15 minutes had their strikers not suffered a case of severe choking in front of goal. A mere tap in from 5 yards was somehow miss hit allowing Cheyne to save well and then Turner, who had scored the equaliser earlier in the year at Peel, shanked his left footed drive when he was put through on goal,. He also fell for the Panucci sucker punch when he should have cut the ball back to an unmarked striker, but attempted to go for goal himself only to find himself dispossessed.

DB was doing his best to earn a second yellow card, his first was for swinging his leg a little too enthusiastically into a challenge, but the referee displayed plenty of common sense and without a doubt is the best referee in the competition.

The Ravens by this point had got themselves back into the contest, and both Zorbie and Artie were finding some space and time to whip some ball into the box. Nothing was to come of this though and nor were the Ravens able to hit the target with some long range bombs from DB, George and Matty.

Half time arrived and the Ravens were quite content with the 0-0 scoreline, having been in this position on many an occasion so far this season. No changes were made, but if the scores were still level with 20 minutes to go, then the Ravens would adopt a more attacking formation.

As the first half had been Normanhurst's, the second half was the Ravens, as they dominated both possession and field position. Nick Zorbas was mistaken on several occasions for Cristiano Ronaldo, as he danced and dazzled his way down the right flank. Never had so much time been afforded to a wide midfielder, yet Normanhurst seemed unable to rectify the problem.

It was from one of Zorbie's pin point crosses that allowed Dave Brennan to all but open the scoring, after his header crashed against the cross bar but bounced away to safety with the cross bar still shaking.

Not long after though it was to be another of Ravens' midfield greats who would earn the penalty to give the black and whites the lead. A Ravens corner was not properly cleared, and it bounced up near the penalty spot. Nathan Grey went to hoof the ball to safety, but the wily old coyote (George McIndoe) who had only just been moved up front to lend some support to Julz, stuck his leg in between the ball and Grey's attempted clearance. Grey's leg/boot crashed into George's left tree trunk and the referee had no alternative but to point to the spot.

Nathan Grey stayed down clutching at his knee, and the stretcher (substitutes bench) was called for. This wasn't the first time Grey had come off second best to Macca, and he may well remember the time at Christie Park where he also needed extended treatment after foolishly contesting a 50/50 challenge with George.

After 10 minutes Grey was stretchered off the field and Julz calmly slotted the penalty to take him to 7 goals for the season and the Ravens to a 1-0 lead.

Brad was immediately pulled back into the centre of the park, his 5 minute sojourn up front over, as the Ravens looked to kill off the game.

This they did with ease and the clocked ticked down without any major threat threat to the Ravens goal. A 1-0 win was secured and the Ravens moved back into 3rd spot. This may not last long though as several teams have games in hand over the Ravens, but if they can keep winning from here on in, they might just be able to secure a semi final spot.

Come on the Mighty Ravens!

Ravens Keep Their Finals Hopes Alive!!

West Pennant Hills 0
Gladesville Ravens 1
(11/07/2009)

The road trip to Normanhurst had proved to be a very fruitful journey and the Ravens were hoping to pick up maximum points on the road to West Pennant Hills this weekend. Never an easy fixture though and success here for the Ravens has been few and far between.

With DB suspended after receiving his 6th yellow card against Normo, Damien Luksic returned from his week's rest to take DB's place in the centre of the park, and the rest of the side remained unchanged with the same formation being adopted to the one used the week before.

The ground wasn't in the best condition and was quite muddy and slippery in parts and the Ravens took a little while to grow accustomed to the bounces and bobbles as well as the vastness of the pitch.

Artie started the game in ominous form and was causing havoc every time he touched the ball. Some slick passing from the Ravens midfield was interrupted by passages of miss kicks and poor control, whilst West Penno were happy to try and catch the Ravens on the counter attack with long clearances from the keeper and early long balls from the back.

The Ravens defence stood fast though and their hard work was soon rewarded when Artie found space in the West Penno 18 yard box and he casually stabbed the ball home with his right foot. 1-0 to the Ravens and West Penno were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men moments later when Matty Roberts and Patti Martins tangled somewhat harmlessly only for Patti to lash out with his right boot, connecting Matty in the side. Considering this had been Patti's best kick of the day so far the referee took pity and only gave him a yellow for his troubles.

Half time arrived and the Ravens were quite relaxed in the away sheds, knowing they only had 45 minutes ahead of them and were already a goal to the good.

No changes and the Ravens kicked off, with the ball going back to Oppy who got a delightful bounce as he tried to square it to Joel. It landed in no-mans land but Joel was able to get there just ahead of Giovenalli to clear the ball to safety. Perhaps this was a payback from Oppy from a first half ball that Panucci had not quite hit hard enough in his direction, which had forced him to hurry his clearance also.

DTrain had a chance to put the Ravens 2 goals to the good, as he stormed in the 18 yard box, but his left footed shot lacked power and Juice made a comfortable save in the West Penno goal.

Moments later Damo was free again, after a delightful ball from Tom C had picked his run out on the left flank. He tried to whip the left foot cross in, but again Juice got in the way just as the ball was falling to Julz.

Moments later Julz got another chance, as he raced in on goal. He knocked the ball past the West Penno keeper, but it rebounded back off the near post and away to safety.

The Ravens couldn't kill the game off. Joel dummied a clearance before turning away from the approaching striker, he then feigned a pass to Tom C on the left as he glided past another West Penno player before slipping the ball through to Artie. Artie had time and space to operate in but the play broke down just as the Ravens looked likely to score again. Great play by yours truly and it certainly reads a lot better than it probably looked. Perks of being the match report writer I guess, well the only perk actually.

The minutes ticked down and finally Patti Martins was sent off after Julz cajoled him into a reckless challenge that saw him receive his 2nd yellow card for the day. Another unusual occurrence, as it is rare to see a West Penno player behaving badly and getting sent off when the Ravens are the opposition - it is usually the other way around.

The full time whistle sounded and the 1st grade double had been completed over West Penno, possibly another first. Reserve Grade had also won earlier in the day, which was definitely a first!!

Ravens return home to Peel Park for the last time this season, so let's get a big crowd down there to cheer on the mighty Ravens as they do battle with St Andrews.
