                                                                Outline Chapter 49

People and the Biosphere
I. Human Population
   A. Population growth
       1. Many environmental problems seem bigger because of the large population increase.
       2. Birthrates vary from one country to another.
       3. Death rate has decreased world wide.
   B. Effects of Lifestyle
       1. The lifestyle of a population has increased the demands for the environment.
       2. In the United States even though there is a low population level more and more energy and natural      resources has been used over the years.
       3. Much of the pollution that humans create is starting to change the climate.
II. Pollution
   A. Biological Magnification
       1. Many producers get a hold of many of the nonbiodegradable products in the water.
       2. Biological magnification occurs with many pesticides and industrial waste products.
       3. DDT used to be an extremely useful pesticide.
   B. Air pollution
       1. Air contains many different chemicals.
       2. The chemical pollution in the air creates a lot of problems.
       3. Smog comes from the words smoke and fog.
   C. Water Pollution
       1. In the U.S. billions of liters of fresh water are used daily.
       2. Almost of the earth is covered by water.
       3. Water can be polluted by the sued of chemical wastes, raw sewage, and high temperatures.
III. The Fate of the Earth
   A. Forests
       1. Everyones life is dependent on the trees that are in the forests all over the world.
       2. Trees are a vital part of many ecosystems.
       3. When trees are cut down the structure of the soil is changed.
   B. Endangered Species
       1. When an animal or plant is threatened by extinction it is called an endangered species.
       2. Endangered species may be caused by the fact that they are hunted and killed too much.
       3. Today a plant or animal becomes extinct every hour.
   C. Why save Endangered Species?
       1. Once a species becomes extinct it can never exist again.
       2. Many people are against the extinction of animals but humans have many needs and sometimes cant help it.
       3. many species produce chemical compounds that are important to human health.
   D. Food For Plants
       1. The crop plants grown in the U.S. come from generations of selective breeding.
       2. Some plants are capable of acquiring disease.
       3. The disease that crops get can wipe out an entire field.
IV. The Future of the Biosphere
   A. Actions for Conservation
       1. There are many people in the world that work together to save the earth from pollution and killing of wild animals and plants.
       2. Today it is very difficult to conserve much of the resources.
       3. There are some groups of people that work to save one species from extinction.
   B. Difficult Decisions
       1. Cleaning the environment and then keeping it that way is not easy.
       2. Many cities today are replacing their sewage system to protect the ocean from pollution.
       3. One solution to the solid waste problem these days is recycling.
