A CELEBRATION OF GOAN MUSIC

7th. December 1997

Launching

The Goan Musical Society was officially launched on the 7th December 1997 at Woodside Park Club, London. A special function was organised to mark the occasion and was attended by more than 90 people, filling up the club hall to its capacity.

The first musical programme of the day was a collection of Konkani mandos, dulpods and dekhnis called 'A Tribute to Goa' and it was performed by the GMS ensemble. This presentation was followed by a sumptuous Goan meal.

After lunch, the audience present was treated to an assortment of instrumentals and songs performed by a number of talented young Goans based in London, who had never performed before an audience. One of the goals of the GMS is to introduce such budding musicians and singers to the local Goan Community in London, besides organising performances by visiting Goan musicians/singers from Goa or elsewhere.

At one stage during the show, all lights were turned off and candle lights on the tables were lit, creating a great ambience in the hall. The GMS ensemble then took over and rendered an assortment of English and Latin American instrumentals using musical instruments like the Portuguese guitar, acoustic guitars, flute and percussion. The GMS choir then joined in for a session of Konkani and Portuguese medleys, following which members of the audience also joined in the singing.
