The character of Tegan Jovanka, a fiesty Australian Air Stewardess was introduced in the Fourth Doctor's swan song episode "Logopolis."  After stumbling into the TARDIS she found herself wandering around lost in the seemingly never ending corridors.  By the time she made it back to the entrance she was no longer on Earth. This began a 3 year stint as whom I consider the best companion the show ever had.  Although at first, Tegan was not thrilled about traveling around in time and space.  All she wanted to do was go home.  Ironically enough, by the time she decided to stay with the crew, she was accidentally left behind in her own time in the episode "Time Flight."
Luckily, Tegan would reappear in the following story, "Arc of Infinity."  It was after a battle with one of the Doctor's most well known foes, the Daleks, that Tegan decided she had had enough and was ready to remain behind on Earth in the year 1984.  Tegan was a great foil to the Doctor.  She was loud, brassy and very opinionated.  From my readings, I am surprised that she is not given her due as one of the better companions.  She was afterall one of the series longest running companions.  But thats ok, I still love the character and Janet Fielding was perfect in the role.
