BACKGROUND:
When the Rick Dom replaced the Zaku II as Zeon’s primary space
use mobile suit, it was decided that a close range combat suit used with the
Rick Doms would increase combat efficiency. Zeonic Company looked to fill this
roll by developing a space combat version of the Gouf. Development of the Gouf
Space Combat Type was slow and the new, more advanced Gyan prototype had been
completed before development of the new Gouf was half done. It had become
apparent that the Gyan would be able to provide better support for the Rick Doms
and plans to mass-produce a space combat version of the Gouf were cancelled.
Plans to mass-produce the Gyan would also be cancelled as the Gelgoog was then
selected to become Zeon’s new lead space combat mobile suit. Despite the
cancellation, development of the Space Combat Gouf continued, and six prototypes
where constructed by the end of the war, with two of them participating in the
final battles of the war. The other four were placed into storage in a hidden
facility near Grenada. These units would eventually be acquired by Anaheim
Electronics and sold to the A.E.U.G., who used them to provide close range
support for their Rick Dias mobile suits.
