Before the completion of Interstate 20/59 from Tuscaloosa to the Mississippi state line, US 11 was the route to Meridian. My family made the trip many times from Tuscaloosa, AL to Thibodaux, LA. The return was long and less than exciting, often creeping to a funeral's crawl thru York and other small towns in west Alabama, a child of five or six not eager to get back to the routine of things after a few days at Maman's being spoiled.

York provided the final highlights along the way with the "York Tunnel" (in my mind, a smaller version of the Harvey Tunnel in New Orleans) as well as the York water tower and sawmill. I used to tell my mom to wake me up to watch these landmarks pass.
