Shisou Yukina: Waiting For the Day

by Take

The tiny bird is fluffed from the cold, making it seem like a walking ball of feathers, and I can't help but laugh at its antics. That, and the fact that I feel you youki nearby.

You think you can hide your presence from me, but you can't, you know. We share a bond, you and I - I'll always know when you're hurt, or in danger, or if you're just close by. That's how I knew whom you were, when we first met. You haven't told me who you are, and I'll wait for you to tell me…I don't want to force you to do something against your will.

"Hiei-san?" I can't help but feel a little hesitant as I approach your perch, and I can't quite suppress the tiny seed of hope that I know is blooming in my eyes. "Have you found my brother yet?" Each time you come, I ask you this. Each time, I give you an opening to tell me the truth.

"I-iie. Gomen, Yukina."

A multitude of emotion flickers in your eyes for a second; fear, sorrow, anger, pain. I can feel my disappointment killing the spark of hope inside me. It's small comfort that I know you want to tell me, but won't, that you're in as much pain as I am.

You're uncomfortable; I can see that, so I let you go. I watch with regret as you slip from my presence, your relief almost tangible.

I think I know part of the reasons why you choose to deny our relationship, oniisan. The bond we share tells me that much, at least. I can sense the bitterness in your soul, first planted by the Elders with your abandonment, and nurtured by the many betrayals that followed. But don't you understand? You're my brother; I love you. It doesn't matter to me what you've done, because I know you, through our link.

It doesn't matter, oniisan. It never has.
