Daniel Smith of Plymouth, Michigan
(Civil War Veteran - died 1912)
Daniel Smith, a Civil War veteran of Company F 2nd New York Cavalary, journeyed down the Erie Canal and headed for Indiana shortly after the end of the Civil War.
He met married Mary Figely and they traveled together to Plymouth, Michigan where he purchased a restaurant.
The couple ran the elegant Lunchroom Restaurant located at the intersection of Starkweather Road and the Pere Marquette Railroad until Daniel's death in 1912.
Daniel Smith's first daughter, May Smith, married World War I veteran, Rolland Allenbaugh, who was originally from Mt Pleasant, Michigan. He had met May and married in the First Baptist Church of Plymouth in 1922. He also worked as a teacher at the old Newburgh School.
The Allenbaugh's bought five acres of choice land, from Raphael Metettal, in the area of Joy Road and Lilley Road, then considered the "greenhouse belt" of Canton. By 1957 he had recontructed a greenhouse using materials he acquired from the purchase of a greenhouse in Northville, Michigan. He also farmed the land and sold his produce at the Eastern and Western Markets of Detroit.
Robert Allenbaugh, was the only son and child, of Rolland and May Allenbaugh. He continued to operate the greenhouse and cultivate the land. He sold his produce at the Ann Arbor Market in Michigan, until 1975, when he sold the property to Jerry Helner, a land speculator, who later sold to David Clark.
