Harry Salisbury (1875 - 1954)
of Dearborn, Michigan

Harry A. Salisbury, a pioneer in the field of education came to Dearborn in 1908 to take charge of the one school in the village. Dearborn at that time had a population of about 900 people. 28 of his 43 years in the public school service, were spent in Dearborn, and in June 1940, he retired. Through the efforts of the graduating class of 1917, the school building located on Garrison Avenue was name, The Salisbury School, in honor of the dean of educators in Dearborn. A placque and picture commemmorating the dedication is located still, on the first floor of the building. Salisbury was a teacher in Dearborn and later Superintendent until 1917, when he returned to teaching.

In November 1942, he and his wife, Minnie, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Both Mr. and Mrs. Salisbury had been active members of the First Methodist Church, and Mr. Salisbury, a teacher of Sunday School also.

Salisbury died on May 13, 1954 and was buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Belleville, Michigan. He was survived by his wife, Minnie, and 3 children, Joyce (Schuman), Glen Salisbury, and H. Dean Salisbury.
