Series Info

Another one of the more popular animé created by Takehiko Inoue that was shown in the country, and based on the manga serialized in the Weekly Shohen Jump and released by TOEI with 101 episodes, it was first aired in Manila by ABC ch.5, then by GMA ch.7. This anime is refreshingly different from most hero-saves-the world, beatdown-action anime being shown today and even gives some minor details about basketball via Dr. T, who by the way represents the creator himself, Takehiko Inoue.
Hanamichi Sakuragi, who was turned down by fifty girls in junior high, joined the Shohoku Basketball Club to get the attention of pretty Haruko Akagi. The problem is Hanamichi doesnt know anything about baksetball, and in fact he hates basketball, since the last girl he courted dumped him for a basketball player but upon the insistence of Haruko and the challenge of Haruko's older brother, Takenori, who was surpsingly beaten by him with Sakuragi's only shot, the slam dunk, Sakuragi joined the team. He also met this year's most promising rookie, and his nemesis on and off the court, the popular Kaede Rukawa, the former gangsters Miyagi Riyota and Hishashi Mitsui, who incidentally was the former junior high MVP and together they change the lowly-ranked Shohoku High basketball team into a powerhouse squad and a title contender in the Japan Inter-High games.

Background: The red-haired, self-proclaimed "tensai"(genius) of basketball, although he only knew how to dunk the ball then. He is a comical but tenacious character of the series and is actually a troublemaker and he fights with anyone who challenges him and leads the Sakuragi-guntai(Sakuragi's Army) who are incidentally his friends from way back in junior high. He joined the basketball club to get close to Haruko, who discovered his amazing vertical leaping abilities. He further developed his skills under Anzai-sensei and was instrumental in Shohoku's entry to the Japan Inter-High games.

Background: Haruko's older brother, a third year student, who is "fondly" called "Gori". He is Shohoku's team captain and starting center. His main goal is to beat prefecture champ, Kainan and take Shohoku to the Japan Inter-high games. He taught Sakuragi, the importance of rebounds. He is a member of Kanagawa prefecture's Mythical Five. He went to college after the Inter-High games.

Position: #14, Shooting Guard
Background: The streak-shooting Mitsui , fondly called "Micthy" by friends, was the former junior high MVP of Takeishi High, he joined Shohoku because of Anzai-sensei and was Akagi's rival during their first year in Shohoku, but during a practice game he injured his leg and left basketball for two years and became a gangster terrorizing people with his gang. He went back to Shohoku team to mess up Riyota, who broke his front teeth in a fight, but ended up playing for the team again after seeing Anzai-sensei. He now serves as the team's second point-maker, after Rukawa and the team's hottest shooter. He later stayed on for the winter games.

Background: Kanagawa prefecture's most promising rookie of the year. His reason for joining Shohoku was because it was near his home, according to Taoka-sensei. He is the popular(he has his own fan club-- the Rukawa Oendan Girls) but sometimes ill-mannered ace of Shohoku and is the object of disgust by Sakuragi who considers him as a sort of rival. When he is not playing ball, he is usually seen sleeping in class. He is a member of Kanagawa prefecture's Mythical Five. He joined the Team Japan after the Inter-High games. He is called "fox" by Sakuragi.

Background: Shohoku's hardcourt general, the cat-quick Miyagi joined the team for Anzai-sensei and plans to be the number one pointguard in Kanagawa. He likes Ayako and is called "Ryo-chin" by Sakuragi. and is the one who taught Sakuragi to feign his shots. He became Shohoku's captain after the Inter-High games.

Background: Shohoku's invaluable 6th man and vice-captain. He is Akagi's teammate and friend since their junior high days, he is fondly called "Megane-kun"(Glassman) by Sakuragi.

Background: Takenori's clueless younger sister and Sakuragi's object of desire, the pretty Haruko convinced Sakuragi to join the basketball team and excel in basketball. She is usually with her two friends Fujii and Matsui. She helped Sakuragi learn with what he called the "common shot" which is actually a lay-up. She ended up as Shohoku's team manager with Ayako after the Inter-High games.

Background: Shohoku's pretty team manager, whom Riyota has a big crush on. She manages the team on and off the court and is usually seen training Sakuragi in basketball basics or whacking him with a large fan whenever he is misbehaving.

Background: Shohoku's head coach and is a respected figure in basketball, he was once known as the "White-haired Devil" and was a member of Japan's national basketball team. He is an excellent bench tactician and has a sharp eye for scouting player's weakness and strengths.

Position: #7, Small Forward or Point Guard
Background: Ryonan's top point-maker and morale booster, he plays very well when he is challenged by his opponents. Sendoh is usually cool, even under pressure and has a sunny personality which reflects on his teamates. He is an excellent leader on the court and is a member of Kanagawa prefecture's Mythical Team. He became Ryonan's captain after Uoizumi's retirement from basketball.

Background: Uoizumi was the tallest player in Kanagawa when he first entered Ryonan. He was not well-built but he persevered and became a dominant force in the slot. He sees Akagi as his rival as the prefecture's top center. He retired from playing ball after Ryonan's defeat in the qualifying tournament and became a chef. He played ball again for the last time teaming up with Shoyo's Fujima, Hanagata and Ryonan's Sendoh and Fukuda to test Shohoku's strength for the upcoming Inter-High competition. He is called "Boss Monkey" by Sakuragi.

Background: A second year student, "Fukki" as he is fondly called, was a new addition to Ryonan and is the team's second ranked point-maker, though his offensive skills is at Sendoh's level, he lacks sufficient defensive skills and is usually rotated with Ikegami, who is Ryonan's best defender.

Background: He is the talkative aide of Taoka-sensei, who seems to be teaching Hikoichi about coaching basics. He keeps different players stats in his little "blue book". Newswriter Yayoi Aida is his elder sister.

Background: Ryonan's stern head coach, a good and calculating bench tactician, he wanted to get Mitsui, Miyagi and Rukawa for his "super team" but was turned down in favor of Anzai-sensei, He now built his team around Sendoh and aims at entering the Inter-High games. He is called "old man" by Sakuragi. He is incidentally Kainan's head coach Takatoh-sensei's sempai-rival during their high school basketball heydays.

Background: He is Kainan's strict head coach, who usually pushes his boys beyond their limits, and as a result Kainan is the prefecture's top team for the past 17 years. He is Taoka's old rival from their high school days and relishes every encounter with him.

Background: Fujima is Shoyo's versatile captain and concurrent head coach. He is also Kanagawa's number two guard. He was looking forward to beating Maki and Kainan, but was railroaded by upstart Shohoku. The left-handed Fujima is an excellent tactician on and off the court and even succesfully led the combined stars of Ryonan and Shoyo in a practice game against Shohoku and nearly defeated them.

Background: Hanagata was Shoyo's former captain and is popular to Shoyo students. Though he is not as powerful as Akagi or Uoizumi, he has the skills, agility and finesse of an excellent shooter which makes him more deadly in the slot. He is called "megane"(Glasses) by Sakuragi.
