An Interview with Patrick Uy

Patrick Uy : Crusade II 40k Champion

Patrick Uy is a veteran gamer of Warhammer for the last two years. He is a consummate player of both Fantasy and 40K and owns a Chaos army in Fantasy and an Eldar and Space Wolves army in 40K.

He recently won the Crusade 2 tournament recently held in Hobby Cafe Alabang. He share's us some of his thoughts with regards to playing in tournaments.

How did you start in the Warhammer Hobby?

A friend introduced me because he like to paint the figs. Since I liked playing strategic games I was naturally drawn to the game though in the beginning the rules seemed so complicated. I got into Fantasy first because the figs looked better but when the there was a dearth of league tourneys in Fantasy and only 40k was being played I got into 40k. Since I felt the rules were better in 40k, I prefer to play it but can play Fantasy if there is no 40k game being played.

How did you prepare for the last tournament?

1. Lots of questions to the game organizers.

2. Make sure that all rules and scenarios are clarified.

3. Made my army list keeping in mind the force organization limitations (no penalties), the figs that were available, the scenarios being played.

4. Playtested the army once but I advise more for less experienced players. Fine tuned army and submitted army list early so that you don't encounter problems on the day of the tourney.

How did you chose your army for the tournament?

Mainly its on the figs that are available but also on the force organization rules. Sometimes the tourney will have force organization rules that favor certain armies.

The last tourney's force organization rules put Eldar and Tyranids at a disadvantage.

Do you practice? How often and with whom?

Usually only in tournaments. But I play in Virra Mall with whoever is looking for an opponent. I am in GH usually every Saturday morning.

Who was your toughest opponent in the tournament and how did you
overcome him?

Of course... it was Jonnel. His force had the best chance of beating me and also the scenario favored him (especially after he moved first).

Unfortunately, he had some bad rolls and after I got my people in hand to hand combat with him it was all over.

Any advice for future tourney players out there?

Practice, practice, practice. Also, clarify and ask everything before you move your troops to make the game faster and to ensure that combat will stay with the plastic and metal troops only and not flesh and
blood.

Arrive early as it gives you the chance to check the opponent and terrain and make preliminary plans.

Any other comments ?

Nope, OK that's it. Thanks a lot for the interview. And I hope to see all of you in the next tournament.
