Oh, this ol' heart of mine been broke a thousand times

Each time we break away, I feel you're gone to stay

Lonely nights that come, memories that go,

Bringin' me back again, hurtin' me more and more

Maybe it's my mistake to show this love I feel inside

'Cause each day that passes by, you got me never knowing if I'm domin' or goin'

*But I, I love you, this ol' heart darlin' is weak for you

I Love you, yes I do, yes I do

These old arms of mine miss havin' you around these tears inside start fallin' down

Always with half a kiss, you remind me of what I miss

Though I try to control myself,

like a fool I start reelin' cos' my head start spinnin'

(*repeat)

Yes I do

Mother, mother

There's too many of you crying

Brother, brother, brother...there's far too many of you dying

You know we've got to find a way...to bring some lovin' here today. Ya

Father, father, we don't need to escalate

You see, war is not the answer for only love can conquer hate

You know, we've got to find a way...to bring some lovin' here today.

Picket lines, and picket signs.  Don't punish me with brutality.

Talk to me, so you can see, Oh what's going on.

What's going on?

Ya, what's going on, Ah, what's going on

In the meantime, Right on baby, right on, right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong

Oh, but who are they to judge us

Simply because our hair is long.  Oh you know we've got to find a way

To bring some understanding here today.

Oh, picket lines and picket signs

Don't punish me with brutality

Come on talk to me, so you can see

What's going on, Ya, what's going on

Tell me, what's going on....I'll tell you what's going on, Uhh

Right on baby

Right on

You Made Me So Very Happy

(Brenda Holloway)
The Brenda Holloway version pre-dates the Blood, Sweat, & Tears version.
Brenda's original version reached #39 on the pop charts in 1967, only two years before the successful cover by Blood, Sweat, & Tears. Brenda wrote the song with her sister Patrice, Berry Gordy and Frank Wilson.  Brenda preferred the BST's version over her own since it closely resembled the way she originally concieved the song. She felt pressured by Gordy to sing the song his way. As Brenda stated: "I had a fight over the way I wanted it put out. Berry put it out the way he wanted it. But then Blood, Sweat and Tears put it out the way I had imagined, and wanted it to be constructed and put out."
