Elizabeth Honnoll Smith wrote to her sister Margaret Jane Honnoll Smith (their husbands were brothers) Dear Sister, It is with pleasure that I take the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am still living, and getting along tolerable well. I would have wrote to you long before this, if I had of known where you was. I recon I never would have heard from you any more, if it had not been for the kindness in Mrs. Porter. She sent me a letter that you wrote to Mr. Porter last August. I got the letter yesterday, and have concluded this morning to write to you. You don't know how glad I was to hear from you and the children, but truly sorry to hear of the death of Thomas (Margaret Jane Honnoll's husband). Though it did not surprise me much, for we had heard some time ago that he died in the war. Still, I did not know how true it was, for we have never had no reliable news from you since the Surrender. It would have been a great satisfaction to me, to have known that he lived as long as he did, and could have heard from you and him. Well Marg, I will now tell you some of my troubles and rumbles since I left you. I moved from Tippah, here, in 63 (1863). I am now living in a mile of Uncle Phil Beckam's (Elizabeth and Margaret's husbands' uncle) old place. My children are all married that is living. Jimmie is dead. He departed this life the 6th of August of 69 (1869). I am living with Sis (daughter Mary). She married a man by the name of Howel. She has one child living and one dead, both boys. Her oldest is dead. He died Sept the 25th in 75 1875). Her youngest child is now 9 years old. Ellison married Annie Malone. They have been married 8 years. They have no children. Katherine married a Maynard. She has one child living and one dead. Her oldest is dead. Her youngest child will be two years old in April. We are all living near each other almost in speaking distance. Marge, I hear from Sister Mez and Sadie occasionally. They are living with Aunt Jane Honnoll. I also hear from Brother's family some time. I recon you will be surprised to hear that he is dead. He was wounded in the war and died, never did get home. He left 5 children, girl and 4 boys. One of his boys was to see me not long ago. What has become of Jim (Smith) and his family? Josiah (Smith) and his family George (Smith) and family? Tell them all to write to me. Marg, I want you to write as soon as you get this and tell me all the news. it will be a great satisfaction to hear from each other if we can't be together. I could write all day and then not get half through telling you all about the ups and downs that have been since I saw you. But I will not say any more this time. I will wait till I get a letter from you and then I will tell all the news in general. Give my love to the children and all the connections and accept a full portion yourself. The children all sends their love to you and family. Write soon and often. So goodby! As ever your Sister, Elizabeth (Honnoll) Smith Direct your letters to Coonewar Mississippi Allison Honnoll Back |
