Thanks to big bad Russ for the snaps, and rooter Myton for the alternative report. Discrepancies between his report and mine may be explained by the fact that I was running about the pitch, whilst he was stoically gazing at John McCutch's arse. Except for the final five minutes, of course...
Hard to believe that this sweaty collection of cadavers were actually winning- "Right lads, let's run through the changes.
Ross notches the all-important fifth.
"Oh crud, there's noone to pass to- I'd best hang onto it for the time being."
Watford 1-6 SBAFC
Well popkids, a veritable SBAFC style rooting as we got up disgustingly early to go to Bushey and play the Internet Hornets.
Watford IFC are usually a well organised side and have got their shit together to the extent that they have a slot on a local radio show, have played a legends team watched by 7,000 people before a proper game at Vicarage Road, and also have coverage in the local paper and their matchday programme. Tim and Danny, there is your challenge - I want to be on News at Ten. And not for the usual reasons.
With SBAFC personnel at a premium, we were well supported by Diane, Anita, Claire, Michelle and the recovering from injury Russ.
It was a quite cold day and the SBA started uncertainly conceding (what looked like an offside goal) after only five minutes and could have conceded more but for a save (please frame it) from me, and a great block from Gary "Overhead" Hickman.
Anyway, Lanie, given a run up front alongside Orca equalised with a coolly slotted finish midway through the first half and then put us 2-1 up with a lob before half time and Danny cut inside and beat a defender to shoot past their keeper to make it 3- 1.
I had virtually bugger all to do in the second half with a defence of Tim and Gary well marshalled by John McCutcheon. Martin struggled manfully with a knee injury throughout and a winger who was very pacy indeed. This forced Martin to play deeper than usual but we had a willing outlet in Banjo down the right to move the ball forward under less pressure. In midfield the triumvirate (bet you don't get that in the News of the World) of Danny, Joe and the ever enthusiastic Ross were excellent both going forward and defence. The defensive excellence of Joe and Ross enabled Danny to play more freely and Lanie and Orca were a cut above the striking partnerships you usually see at this level. Orca deservedly got his goal midway through the second half after a long throw from me (an assist!) and a run from Danny that took the ball to the byline - his cutback enabled Orca to coolly slot home from about 8 yards.
It was all SBA after that - Ross scored with a thumping header from a pinpoint Banjo corner, and Joe added the "crucial" sixth smacking the ball in off the far post after more good work from Danny. In truth we might have had one or two more, but I got the last five minutes or so up front, so we didn't.
Watford were excellent sporting opponents - and we made it the pub in time for beverages before the "endurance test" of the afternoon. I failed - returning to the pub at half time to watch the rest of the game on telly with a beer, and to try and restore Coventry pride by beating the locals at pool after warming up on Orca. Mission accomplished there at least...
Shooter of the match - I gave this to Ross who broke everything up in midfield and passed the ball about well as well as getting a goal. In truth it could have been any one of the ten outfield players. Rooter of the match - the Watford guy who arranged the game at 930am but forgot to book the pitch and didn't turn up.
